UWF Returns To Play This Weekend Against Montevallo

The Argos lead the GSC in scoring with 76 points per game

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team will return to action this weekend when it plays host to Montevallo Friday and Saturday at the UWF Field House.
* The Argonauts will be playing for the first time since Dec. 14 at Lee - a span of 25 days which is a school record for the longest time between games in the same season.
* Friday's game will start at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's contest is slated for a 2 p.m. tip-off. Both games will be carried by the UWF Sports Network, with distribution on GoArgos.com, Cox Sports Television and YurView Florida.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is 1-1 on the season with a home win over Shorter and road loss to Lee. Next week, the Argonauts are scheduled to play at AUM on Tuesday before having the weekend off.
* In the win over Shorter, senior Gabby Brown scored 13 points in her UWF debut to lead four players in double figures in a 94-67 triumph. Juniors Fanny Hulmi and Charlotte Ellmore had 13 apiece, while senior Danielle Norquest came off the bench to finish with 10 points, seven boards and four assists. Ellmore handed out a game-high seven assists as UWF assisted on 24 of its 34 made baskets. UWF shot 48 percent overall and made nine 3-pointers in winning its season opener for the fifth-consecutive year.
* Lee shot 49 percent overall and was 11-of-24 on 3-pointers for a 80-58 win over the Argos. UWF shot 31 percent and was only 5-of-24 from outside. Ellmore led UWF with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Norquest and junior Aline Fevrier added nine each. Brown grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to help UWF claim the battle on the boards, 44-37.
 
UWF HOOPS HISTORY 101
* The Argonauts are 579-509 all-time and 232-179 in GSC play … UWF has won three East Division and one overall regular-season titles, along with the 2013-14 GSC Tournament crown … The Argos have played in six NCAA Regional Tournaments – including four in the last seven years – and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017 with a school-record 28 victories … Prior to last year's 8-win campaign, UWF had averaged 21 wins in the previous six seasons.
 
COVID-19 PROTOCOLS IN PLACE
* In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, UWF will limit attendance for all December 2020 and January 2021 home men's and women's basketball games to immediate family members of UWF student-athletes and coaches. Visiting teams will be permitted a pre-approved guest pass list.
* Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required inside the arena by spectators and staff. Fans will not be allowed on the court at any time, including pre-and post-game.
 
SCOUTING MONTEVALLO
* Montevallo enters the weekend at 1-2 after closing the December portion of the schedule with a 91-46 road win over Shorter. The Falcons dropped a pair of very closely contested games to West Georgia, 77-72, and Valdosta State, 62-61, to open the year. Their two games against Lee last weekend were postponed.
* Jordan Jones leads three players in double figures with 13.3 points per game. Marissa Snodgrass has made a team-high eight 3-pointers for 10.7 ppg and has handed out 10 assists in three games.
* UM is shooting 42 percent from the floor and averaging 74.7 ppg. The Falcon defense is among the GSC leaders, holding opponents to 33 percent shooting overall and 19 percent from 3-point land.
 
UWF-UM SERIES HISTORY
* UWF leads the all-time series with Montevallo 33-19. The Falcons have won the last two games, sweeping last year's home-and-home contests. Prior to that, the Argos had won four of the previous five.
* Notable UWF performances in the series include Halee Nieman's school-record 42 points in a 98-86 win in Dec. of 2017; Four of the top five single-game rebounding marks came against the Falcons - School-record 24 by Carla Peoples in 1990, along with 23 by Toni Brewer in 2016, Segeeta Bland in 2000 and Denise McDonald in 1986.

YELTON NEARING 200 HEAD COACHING WINS
* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her ninth season at UWF and has a 141-96 record at UWF … She is 198-180 in her 14th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
 
GSC SPLIT INTO DIVISIONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2010-11
* With an abbreviated season due to the uncertainty of health and wellness brought on by the Corona virus pandemic, the Gulf South Conference worked through a number of scheduling scenarios and ultimately settled on a 20-game slate using an East-West model … UWF is in the East with AUM, Lee, Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia … The Argos will face AUM and Montevallo four times, and the other four schools three times … The top four teams from each division will qualify for the GSC Championship.
 
UWF PICKED 6TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Falcons were picked second … Defending champion Lee earned four of six first place votes and was picked first in the East, followed by UM who received the other two first place votes. West Georgia, Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery were ahead of the Argos, with Shorter picked seventh.
 
NORQUEST NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Senior F Danielle Norquest was named to the Preseason All-GSC East Division Team last week … The standout from Diamond, Ohio, is coming off a season in which she averaged 14.5 points and 12.9 rebounds per game … She is the third leading returning scorer in the GSC East Division … Last season she led the league and ranked sixth nationally with a school-record-tying 21 double-doubles … Norquest enters the Lee game with 656 points and 532 rebounds in three-plus seasons at UWF.
 
WHAT'S BACK FOR THE ARGOS
* UWF returns six letterwinners from a year ago, including five players who started at least 15 games … Senior F Danielle Norquest and junior G Charlotte Ellmore each started all 28 games and combined for 24.2 points, 16.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game … Junior C Aline Fevrier continued to improve in the post with 5.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg … Additionally, redshirt sophomore PG D'Asia Collins returns after missing the entire season with a knee injury.
 
UWF NEWCOMERS
* UWF has seven newcomers, along with a redshirt freshman who missed the final 21 games from a year ago … The Argos brought in Division I transfers Gabby Brown and Peyton Lewis, to go with true freshmen Alex Haymon, Makayla Michael, Alli Morgan, Amara Newsom and Megan SanfratelloMary Denman Luker received a medical redshirt after a knee injury ended her season after nine games.
