Pensacola, Fla.- The Argonauts defeated a tough Lee Flames team tonight at the UWF Soccer Complex. West Florida was like a brick wall defensively holding the Flames to only one goal.
In the first half, the Argos got the lead early in the fourth minute of play with a goal by
Kainan Dos Santos assisted by
Caue Novaes. This set the tone for the Argos on both sides of the ball during the first half.
Throughout the whole game, a collective defensive effort was led by defenders,
Lucas Barankiewicz and
Elijah Howe.
Lucas Barankiewicz had his first action this season and was named captain for today's matchup.
Heading into halftime, the Argos still had the upper hand 1-0.
In the second half, Lee had multiple offensive touches. The Flames did outshoot the Argos 17-6, but the Argos were able to clamp down the Flames offense. It was a very intense matchup between these two teams.
West Florida was unstoppable defensively the whole game. Goalkeeper
Jihad Gomes had a big night for the Argos with seven saves. The back line of the defense allowed for three team saves to keep the Flames at only one goal.
In the 87
th minute, Argos leading scorer,
Keegan Ancelin scored another goal to give the Argos the lead 2-0. The goalkeeper Sam Keener was out of the box to allow for Ancelin to score the ball into an empty net.
Bernardo Torres was handed the assist. Two minutes later, the Flames came back with a goal by Fabrizio Scimo.
The Argos were able to hold off the Flames and win the game 2-1. This improves the UWF record to 5-2-2 on the season.
