WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – On the opening day of competition from the 2021 GSC/SSC Regional Crossover, the No. 10 University of West Florida Argonauts picked up another decisive victory sweeping Florida Southern to improve to 23-1 on the season.
Coming in as the highest seeded team in the Gulf South Conference, the Argonauts started a bit slow in today's tournament opener before narrowly taking set one then cruising to wins in sets two and three. Winning 28-26, 25-21, and 25-11, today's victory marked the first time West Florida has picked up a victory at this Crossover since the 2017 season.
In today's match, three players finished double-digit kills as the West Florida offense was once again firing on all cylinders with
Taylor Vaneekeren setting up hitters from every position on the court.
Madi Cooler finished the match as the pace setter in kills finishing with 12 kills over the three sets.
Tyler Fezzey and
Veresia Yon each added on 11 kills themselves on the night while each hitting over .400 against the Mocs.
Defensively,
Ashton Marshall and Vaneekeren topped the team in digs in the match each finishing with 13 digs total. Between these 13 digs as well as 33 assists, Vaneekeren finished the match with a double-double helping the Argonauts once again in many fronts of their game.
Focus now shifts to tomorrow as West Florida will be back in action with two more matches from the Regional Crossover. First serve in the first match of the day is set for 11:15 am (CST) as the Argonauts take on Lynn, then in the night cap, West Florida will take on No. 17 Nova Southeastern at 6 pm (CST) to close out the tournament.
