Argonauts Fall in Double Overtime to the Chargers

Chargers score late in the 102nd minute

Box Score Birmingham, Ala.- The Argonauts stayed in Birmingham to play GSC foe, Alabama Huntsville this Saturday afternoon. This is the second matchup the Argos have played in Birmingham this week. The Argos lost a tough battle this afternoon to the Chargers.

On Thursday, West Florida played GSC opponent West Alabama and won 4-2. The Argos had a slow start with one goal in the first half. West Florida came out of halftime with more momentum and scored three goals in the second half to defeat the Tigers.

Coming into today's matchup against the Chargers, the Argos look to continue their momentum. West Florida had a few good looks at the net in the first half. In the 6th minute of play, Keegan Lynch had a shot that missed high and another shot missed left by Caue Novaes in the 25th minute.

The Chargers came out with a goal to take the lead in the 8th minute of play by midfielder, Deivi Bucio.

In the 41st minute, freshman Jacob Tankersley scored to put the Argos on the board. This is his first goal of the season. The assist was given to Owen Hawkins. Both teams head into halftime tied at one.

The Argos came out of the half with a shot in the 50th minute by Jack Patching, but it was saved by the UAH goalkeeper Ethan Haworth. The Argos were aggressive in the second half with more looks at the net by Keegan Lynch, Caue Novaes, and Jack Patching.

Early in the second half, the Argos had six shots with two shots each by Novaes and Patching. The Chargers goalkeeper had three saves on the half to keep the Argos from taking the lead. In the 89th minute, Bernardo Torres takes a shot and misses high. At the end of regulation, both teams were tied 1-1.

In overtime, Patching had a shot missed high in the 95th minute of play and Torres had a shot that was saved by the Charger goalkeeper in the 96th minute of play. This led the game into double overtime.

In the 102nd minute, the Chargers scored a golden goal by Connor Young. West Florida suffers a tough loss to UAH 2-1. The Chargers improve to 6-5-2. 

Up Next: The Argos will be back in action to play Delta State on Friday, Oct. 29 and Mississippi College on Sunday, Oct. 31.
