Argonauts Head to Montevallo for Weekend Clash with the Falcons

West Florida narrowly escaped with a win the last time these teams met in 2019

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Riding high after a big conference win this past Tuesday, the University of West Florida Volleyball team will be put right back to the test this Saturday when they hit the road to take on another very tough conference opponent in Montevallo.

Coming off of a five-set thriller the last time these two teams met in 2019, the Argonauts will look to remain unbeaten in conference play with a win on Saturday against the Falcons. Overall, this meeting will mark match No. 26 between these two teams with West Florida currently holding the 21-4 advantage.

About West Florida: Holding steady as the No. 15 ranked team in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the Argonauts are off to one of their best starts in program history starting 18-1 on the season including a 6-0 mark in conference play.

Named this week's GSC Offensive Player of the Week, Tyler Fezzey has been firing on all cylinders as of late coming up in big moments when the Argonauts need her the most. Averaging just under 13 kills per match over the past three matches, Fezzey has been someone Head Coach Melissa Wolter can lean on over these past few weeks of play.

Combining with Fezzey as a one-two punch from the front row, middle blocker Veresia Yon has continued to impress this season showing her versatility on both offense and defense night in and night out. Ranking in the top five of the conference in kills, hitting percentage, blocks, and points, Yon has been the model of consistency finishing with eight or more kills and three or more blocks in each of the Argonauts last eight matches.

Taylor Vaneekeren has been another key component of the Argonauts success this season setting up hitters perfectly all season long from her setter position. The junior is currently averaging 10.39 assists per set which is top within the conference.

As a team, West Florida currently ranks within the top five of the nation in assists per set, blocks per set, hitting percentage, kills per set, team assists, team kills, and total team blocks.

About Montevallo: The Falcons, who are set to take on Auburn Montgomery Friday night, currently sit with an 8-8 record on the season including a 2-2 mark in conference play.

Picking up wins against Mississippi College and West Alabama within the conference, Montevallo has relied on a strong defensive presence this season, specifically their blocking game which is currently third best in the conference.

Offensively, panhandle local Evelina Teran has been a dominant force for the Falcons averaging 3.49 kills per set on the season including 57 kills in Montevallo's first four conference matches. Already with six double-doubles on the season, the Argonauts must be sure to slow down Teran in Saturday's matchup.

Libero, Casey Hendrixson has been off to a fantastic start for Montevallo this season as she currently ranks second in the conference in digs per set with an average of 4.62 on the season. The already two-time GSC Defensive Player of the Week, Hendrixson has had double-digit digs in all but two matches this season and has been a key piece defensively for the Falcons.

Saturday's Schedule: First serve for Saturday's match is set for 2 pm (CST) from Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, Alabama. Fans interest in keeping up with the match can follow via live-stream here, or if preferred, live-stats here.
