PENSACOLA, Fla. – After another great weekend of play this past weekend, the University of West Florida Volleyball team will be back in action this Tuesday when Gulf South Conference opponent Montevallo comes to town for the Argonauts final home match of the regular season.
Now 27-1 on the season including a perfect 12-0 mark in GSC play, West Florida has been on a tear all season long including winning their past 22 straight matches. This impressive record gives the Argonauts the best winning percentage in the nation and ranked as the No. 8 ranked team in the Oct. 26 AVCA Coaches Poll.
In addition to Tuesday's match, West Florida will just have three more road matches left this regular season before they embark in postseason play starting the third weekend in November.
About West Florida: The Argonauts who have already clinched a spot in the GSC Championship Tournament, are looking to secure the number one seed in the tournament with a strong finish to the regular season. If secured, West Florida would host the GSC Championship at the Field House for the sixth season in a row.
Sitting within the top ten of the nation in many different offensive and defensive categories, the Argonauts have been a very difficult team to matchup against this season due to the wide variety of options in both their blocking and hitting game.
Veresia Yon has been one of the key contributors to the Argos success on both offense and defense this season leading the team in blocks and hitting percentage while ranking second in kills and points per set. On the season, Yon has totaled 302 kills, 382.5 points, and 113 blocks which has her ranked first in the GSC in blocks, fifth in kills, and fourth in points.
Outside hitter
Madi Cooler has been another key piece to West Florida's success this season leading the team in both points and kills per set. Averaging 3.84 kills per set and 4.26 points per set on the season, Cooler has struck fear in many of the Argonauts opponents with her big hitting ability.
A big part of this success from the Argos hitters this season is due to the great play from junior setter
Taylor Vaneekeren. Vaneekeren currently ranks first in the conference in assists per set and sixteenth in the nation with her 10.88 assist per set average.
As a team, West Florida ranks first in the conference in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists, opponent assists, kills, opponent kills, blocks, opponent aces, and opponent digs.
About Montevallo: The Falcons enter Tuesday's matchup with a 14-12 overall record including wins in their last five matches.
Ranking within the top three of the conference in many offensive and defensive categories, Montevallo has started playing some of their best volleyball over these past few weeks including joining the Argonauts as the only GSC teams to go unbeaten at the Regional Crossover.
Senior outside/right side Evelina Teran has taken her game to another level these past few weeks including a selection as the GSC Offensive Player of the Week this past week. On the season, Teran is averaging 3.78 kills per set and 4.31 points per set which is within the top two of the GSC in each.
Allie Dishman and Macy Martin have each been complementary pieces to Teran for Montevallo each averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season. These three players have combined for over half of the Falcons points this season totaling over 880 points on the season.
Defensively, libero Casey Hendrixson has been one of the top defensive players in the conference picking up over 400 digs already this season. Averaging 4.67 digs per set, Hendrixson currently ranks second in the conference in digs per set and is a big reason for the Falcon's defensive success this season.
Schedule for Tuesday: Action is set to get underway at 6 pm (CST) on Tuesday from the UWF Field House. As previously mentioned, this will be the Argonauts final regular season home match of the season so come out and cheer them on as they take on Montevallo.
