Gabby Brown Takes Dead Aim With 27 in Win Over Crusaders

The Argos won their fourth-consecutive game

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Gabby Brown had career-highs of 27 points and six 3-pointers to lead UWF to a 71-50 win over William Carey at the UWF Field House on Sunday.

UWF (4-1) won its fourth-consecutive game and outscored WC 29-7 in the fourth quarter. The Argonauts shot 34 percent but tied their season high with 10 made 3-pointers. They also outrebounded the Crusaders 48-30 and used 18 offensive boards to score 14 second chance points.

Brown had 19 points in the second half, including 13 in the final period.

Jaclyn Jarnot had 12 points and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds, tying for the tenth-most in a game in program history. It marked her fourth-straight double-double. Her game-high three steals also matched her career high.

Maddie Griffon handed out six assists as the team assisted on 19 of 22 field goals.

UWF used an 8-0 run to grab a 10-2 lead before WC answered with 10-straight to tie it at 12-12. The Crusaders stretched their lead to 27-21 late in the second quarter before the Argos closed the frame on a 7-3 run as Peyton Lewis beat the buzzer with a corner three to trim the deficit to 30-28 heading into the half.

The third quarter had six lead changes with WC holding a 43-42 edge going into the final 10 minutes.

That's when the Argos took over.

UWF scored the first nine points in the opening three minutes and never looked back. Brown scored 11 points in the next 2:40 to push the lead to 16 with 4:03 to play.

"We needed to calm down on defense to relieve pressure on our offense," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said, when referring to the start of the fourth quarter. "Once we did that, it opened up the offense so that we could score."

The Crusaders missed their first three shots and had two turnovers on their first five possessions of the fourth.

WC (3-2) was led by Rebekah Engle and Jamaya Galloway, who finished with 11 points each. The Crusaders shot 39 percent overall but were just 2-of-10 in the final period.

UWF will hit the road for the GSC-opener on Wednesday night when they face West Georgia (2-2). Tip-off at the UWG Coliseum in Carrollton, Georgia is at 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
