VALDOSTA, Ga.- The University of West Florida Women's Soccer team defeated the Valdosta State Blazers 1-0 on Sunday to advance to the Gulf South Conference Semifinals.
West Florida came out strong during the first half of the match to control possession of the ball majority of the first half. During the first half of the match the Argos outshot the Blazers 10-2. Six shots were on goal, with VSU goalkeeper Emma Pruett having six saves to keep West Florida off the board.
Defensively, the Argos were aggressive on all points of the field, taking the ball from VSU and keeping them out of scoring territory. Kiliegh Whited,
Bailey Erwig,
Hannah Wooten and
Destiny Hird, were especially pivotal in controlling the defense.
Offensively,
Blair Cowan,
Peyton Peffers and
Brianna Pope were consistent creating opportunities to take shots and playing well up top.
Overall in the first half UWF had 10 shots, 6 shots on goal and six corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Charline Favier had one save.
In the second half of the match the Lady Blazers looked to push the tempo early on playing aggressive on both sides of the field. During the second half the Lady Blazers were able to take two corner kicks but were unable to score.
In the 73rd minute
Julia Comin scored West Florida's lone goal off of a corner kick. The momentum would continue to shift in the Argos favor, picking up the tempo on defense. During the second half of the match West Florida outshot Valdosta 6-0. UWF had six corner kicks, while Valdosta had two.
The Argos would go on to close out the match with a final score of 1-0, outshooting the Lady Blazers 16-2.
