Argonauts Defeat West Georgia in First Conference Game of the season

West Florida is now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference

The University of West Florida Men's Basketball team started conference play with a 69-65 win over the University of West Georgia Wolves. UWF is now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference action. 

"This was a terrific conference win on the road, said UWF Coach Jeff Burkhamer. "Against a good team. We had some stretches that we played very well and we had some stretches that we struggled. But we found a way to win."
 
Daniel Sofield led the Argos with 19 points and was perfect from the beyond the arc knocking down four three-pointers. Sofield was 4-4 from the three-point line and 6-9 from the field overall.
 
During the first half UWF was 13-31 from the field shooting 41.9 percent. From the free throw line, the Argos were perfect knocking down all eight shots. West Georgia struggled to make shots in the first half and was 9-32 from the field shooting 28.1 percent. 
 
Jejuan Weatherspoon led the way for the Argos at halftime with eight points and three rebounds. LaTrell Tate put on a show for the hometown crowd scoring six points in the first half. Wendell Matthews had a team high four rebounds in the first half. 
 
In the second half West Florida was able to keep their momentum going and maintain the lead. The West Georgia Wolves however went on a 22-13 run during the second half and were able to erase a 13 point deficit. 
 
Michael Zabetakis and Seth Brown-Carter put the Wolves back into the game. Brown-Carter led the way for West Georgia with 15 points and Zabetakis added 13. 
 
With 2:50 remaining in the game the Wolves were able to tie it all up at 60 apiece. The Argos found a way to finish the game and were able to take back the lead after Sofield converted the and one, after being fouled on a made layup. 

"Daniel Sofield and LaTrell Tate made big plays and free throws late in the game." Burkhamer continued "We also got some key stops and rebounds. I am really proud of our guys and was glad to see us get a win."
 
Jejuan Weatherspoon came off the bench for the Argos and scored in double figures, with 12 points. Wendell Matthews and LaTrell Tate each had 10 points. Matthews and Weatherspoon both had a team high six rebounds. 

The Argos were 23-53 overall on 43 percent shooting. As a team UWF had 48 rebounds and 10 steals. West Georgia was 24-65 from the field shooting 37 percent. 
 
UWF is now 1-0 starting conference play and 6-1 on the season. Up next the Argos will travel back to the Peach State on Saturday to face Albany State for the second time this season.
