Argos Return To GSC Play at No. 19 Lee, Shorter

The Argonauts are looking to stay at the top of the GSC standings

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Riding a 6-game win streak, the UWF women's basketball team will head North to face No. 20/19 Lee and Shorter, beginning Saturday afternoon against the Lady Flames. That game will begin at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, with Monday's game at Shorter tipping off at 5:30 p.m. ET.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF improved to 6-1 on the season last Saturday with a 63-59 home win over Columbus State. That came on the heels of a 54-44 road win over West Georgia in the conference opener on Dec. 1.
* The Argonauts have won their last six games which is the longest active streak in the GSC.
* Newcomers Zoe PillerJaclyn Jarnot and Maddie Griffon have been strong additions to the team, playing keys roles with returning standouts Charlotte EllmoreGabby BrownPeyton Lewis and Fanny Hulmi.
* Jarnot averages a double-double with 15.3 points per game and 12.6 rebounds per game (1st in GSC, 19th in NCAA). The North Dakota transfer has registered a double-double in the last six games, including a 12-point, 20-rebound effort against William Carey three games ago and 24 and 16 against Columbus State last Saturday. She is third in the country with six double-doubles. She has made 17-of-18 FT in the last three games with an 8-for-8 effort last Saturday.
* Piller has been the GSC Freshman of the Week three times and the Player of the Week once. She averages 15.6 ppg and 9.9 rpg with four double-doubles. She leads the GSC and is seventh in the NCAA with a 63.8 FG pct.
* Brown established career-highs for points (27) and 3-pointers made (6) in the win over William Carey two Sundays ago. She has scored eight, 27 and eight three of her last four games, her three highest outputs this season.
* Griffon has 24 assists through seven games, including 14 in the past three contests.
* Ellmore leads the team with 26 assists and is 14th nationally and 2nd in the GSC with a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.
* UWF is averaging 68.4 ppg as a team on 40.2 pct. shooting. They are allowing 57.4 ppg on 35.5 pct. shooting.
* UWF has made 38-of-47 (80.9 pct) FT in the last three games. The Argos average 22.0 FT attempts per game.
* The Argos have assisted on 70 pct. of its baskets (46 of 66) in the last three games while raising its season average from 54.9 to 61 pct.

JARNOT, PILLER SWEEP GSC WEEKLY AWARDS
* UWF's front court tandem of Jaclyn Jarnot and Zoe Piller were named the GSC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively on Tuesday. Both players averaged a double-double in the wins over UWG and Columbus State.
* Jarnot turned in her third-consecutive week of averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 13.0 rebounds. Additionally, the left-hander was 11-of-12 at the free throw line while adding three assists, two blocks and a steal. She totaled 11 points and 10 boards against the Wolves in her first GSC contest and then had game highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds versus CSU. The 24 points were one shy of her career high from two weeks earlier. It was the only 20-point, 15-rebound game in the GSC this year and one of just 15 in the country thus far.
* Through seven games, Jarnot is ranked fifth in the GSC with 15.3 points per game and first with 12.6 rebounds as the only player averaging a double-double. The senior transfer from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota has nearly doubled her best single-season scoring average from her time at North Dakota from 2019-21. Her six double-doubles are third nationally.
* Piller's weekly averages were 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, while she shot 67 percent with both games at 64 percent or higher. At UWG she led all players with 18 points, including eight in the final six minutes as UWF pulled away for the 10-point win. On Saturday she was dominant at both ends of the floor with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 15 caroms. She was also 5-of-6 at the free throw line for the week.
* The rookie from Nolensville, Tennessee is averaging 15.6 points and 9.9 boards per contest through her first seven college contests. Piller leads the GSC and is seventh in the country with a 63.8 field goal percentage. This is the third time in four weeks that Piller has won the Freshman of the Week. She was also the Player of the Week last week.

REBOUNDING A STRENGTH FOR UWF ONCE AGAIN
* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2021-22 appears to be no different. UWF ranks first in the GSC at 45.1 rpg and is fourth in rebound defense, allowing just 32.0 rpg. The 13.1 rebound margin is first (4th in NCAA), with Lee in second at 9.1.

UWF RANKED SEVENTH IN THE D2SIDA SOUTH REGION POLL
* UWF has moved up to No. 7 in the latest D2 Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) region rankings. Lee is No. 3 and receiving one first place vote. Tampa is No. 1 and Union is No. 2.

ABOUT LEE
* Lee is 8-1 on the year following a road split against No. 20 Union (L, 69-79) and Christian Brothers (W, 75-63) last week. The Lady Flames have a 28.8 average margin of victory in their eight wins with each one by double-digits.
* Haley Schubert averages 18.0 ppg to lead Lee, while her 6.6 assists per game are first in the GCS and fifth in the country. She also leads the GSC and is 12th nationally with 25 steals. Halle Hughes is second on the team at 13.4 ppg and first with 6.8 rebounds per contest. Both players are also in the top 7 of the GSC in free throw shooting.
* Lee averages 77.0 ppg on 45.6 pct. shooting, including 7.7 3-pointers per contest at 34 pct. They have a plus-9.1 rebounding margin with 40.9 rpg. The Lady Flames lead the GSC at the free throw line with 79.5 pct. accuracy. Lee also leads the GSC in fewest turnovers with 14.6 per game, just ahead of UWF's 15.1.
* Marty Rowe is in his 18th season in Cleveland and has a 444-115 record. Rowe is 577-180 in 23 seasons as a head coach and his teams have won 20-plus contests in 20 of his 23 seasons, including 16 at Lee. 
 
UWF-LEE SERIES HISTORY
* Lee holds an 11-5 record in the series dating back to their transition to NCAA status in 2013. UWF is 1-6 at Lee with the win coming in Dec. of 2018.
* The Argos went 1-2 against the Lady Flames last season, losing at Lee in December before splitting a pair in Pensacola in late January. The 71-61 win over the 18th-ranked Lady Flames was the 200th career win for Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.

ABOUT SHORTER
* Shorter is 1-3 and 0-2 entering its game against Valdosta State on Saturday.
* Jasmine Gaines leads the GSC with 20.0 ppg and reached the 1,500-point plateau last week. Kelly Pickett has 12.7 ppg and a team-high eight 3-pointers thus far. Tiara Lewis is tops on the team with 9.5 rpg to go along with her 9.8 ppg.
* SU makes 34 pct. from the floor and 29 pct. from outside for 59.3 ppg.
* LaSheena Nation took over at Shorter in August as the head coach following two seasons as an assistant at AUM and two at Snead State CC in Boaz, Ala.
 
UWF-SHORTER SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 12-6 all-time against Shorter and has won eight of the last nine. The Argos are 5-3 at the Winthrop-King Centre
* UWF won the only meeting a year ago, 94-67, in the season-opener in Pensacola and the teams split their series in 2019-20. Prior to that, the Argos swept the previous three seasons for a 6-game winning streak.
 
YELTON IN TENTH SEASON AT UWF
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her tenth season at UWF and has a 155-107 record with the Argos … She is 212-191 in her 15th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 5-11 against Lee and 12-6 against Shorter.
 
UWF PICKED 8TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish eighth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Wolves were picked ninth … Defending champion Union earned 10 of 12 first place votes and was picked first for the third-consecutive year. Lee received one first place vote, followed by Valdosta State with the 13th top vote. Montevallo took fourth, while Delta State rounded out the top five with Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama and West Florida sixth through eighth. West Georgia was ninth, while Christian Brothers, Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter also in the list.
