AUM, Montevallo Are Coming To Town For Holiday Games

The Argonauts are off to their best start in 23 years

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team returns home following two exciting road victories last week, including one over No. 19 Lee, to play host to AUM and Montevallo Saturday and Monday at the UWF Field House.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play and brings an 8-game winning streak into the weekend.
* Newcomers Zoe PillerJaclyn Jarnot and Maddie Griffon have been strong additions to the team, playing keys roles with returning standouts Charlotte EllmoreGabby BrownPeyton Lewis and Fanny Hulmi.
* Jarnot averages a double-double with 16.2 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game (1st in GSC, sixth in NCAA). Her 9.2 defensive boards per contest are third in the country. The North Dakota transfer has registered a double-double in seven of nine games to rank fifth in the country.
* Piller has been the GSC Freshman of the Week three times and the Player of the Week once. She averages 17.3 ppg and 9.9 rpg with five double-doubles. She leads the GSC and is sixth in the NCAA with a 64.1 FG pct. He scoring average is ninth in the NCAA among freshmen.
* Griffon has 30 assists through nine games, including 20 in the past five contests.
* Ellmore leads the team with 33 assists and is 18th nationally and 2nd in the GSC with a 2.54 assist-to-turnover ratio.
* UWF is averaging 70.9 ppg as a team on 40.7 pct. shooting. They are allowing 61.3 ppg on 38.1 pct. shooting.
* The Argos have assisted on 58.8 pct. of their baskets (70 of 119) in the last five games while raising the season average from 54.9 to 57 pct.

UWF OFF TO ANOTHER STRONG START
* As has been the case under Stephanie Lawrence Yelton, UWF is playing some strong basketball at the start of the season. The 8-1 start is currently tied for the best after nine games in program history. It is also the fourth time in the last seven years to be at least at 7-2 or better after nine contests. The three previous teams all won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament with the 2017 squad reaching in the Elite Eight.

WIN STREAK REACHES EIGHT, TIED FOR NO. 3 IN PROGRAM HISTORY
* UWF has reeled off eight-consecutive wins, tied for the third-longest streak in UWF women's basketball history. The 2018-19 squad won the final 13 regular-season games for the record, bettering the mark of 10-straight by the 2005-06 team.
 
UWF APPROACHING 600 ALL-TME WOMEN'S BASKETBALL VICTORIES
* UWF enters the weekend with 596 all-time wins dating back 42 years to the inaugural season of 1981-82. The Argonauts are 596-519 all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 18 appearances.
* In 28 seasons of NCAA/GSC membership, the program is 421-327 for a .560 winning pct., ranking fifth among current members and third among those that have been in the league for at least 10 seasons.

GETTING TO THE LINE
* UWF has made 147 free throws this season for a 16.3 makes per game, while averaging 23.6 FT attempts per game. The opponents have ATTEMPTED nine fewer FTs (138) than UWF has MADE (147) this season.
* The Argos have attempted at least 20 free throws in a game five times this season.
* UWF has made 81-of-105 (77.1 pct) FT in the last five games. 

REBOUNDING A STRENGTH FOR UWF ONCE AGAIN
* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2021-22 appears to be no different. UWF ranks first in the GSC at 44.2 rpg and is second in rebound defense, allowing just 30.9 rpg. The 13.3 rebound margin is first (3rd in NCAA), with Delta State in second at 9.3.

UWF RECEVING VOTES IN WBCA TOP 25 POLL, RANKED SIXTH IN THE D2SIDA SOUTH REGION POLL
* UWF received five votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 Poll. That places the Argonauts 11th among the others receiving votes.
* UWF moved up to one spot to No. 6 in the latest D2 Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) region rankings following the wins at No. 19 Lee and Shorter last week.
* Tampa is No. 1 and Union and Eckerd are tied at No. 2. Valdosta State is No. 4 and Barry is just ahead of the Argos at No. 5.

ABOUT AUM
* AUM is 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in GSC action. The Warhawks dropped both games last week, 69-58 at Montevallo and 57-51 at home to Delta State.
* Catlin Carter (10.9 points, 3.7 rebounds) leads a group of four players who average at least 9.0 points per game. Jamya Tyus averaged 3.1 assists per game to go with 9.9 ppg, while Jordan Brewster is again the top outside threat with 18 3-pointers and 9.3 ppg.
* AUM averages 63.6 ppg on 41.9 pct. shooting, including 5.6 3-pointers per contest at 32 pct. They have a plus-1.7 rebounding margin, 9.7 steals per game and block 5.0 shots per game. The Warhawks are second in the GSC with 31.8 FG pct. defense. 
 
UWF-AUM SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 9-2 against AUM since the Falcons moved from NAIA to NCAA Division 2 in 2016. The Argos are 3-2 at the UWF Field House and 6-0 at the AUM Gymnasium. Both losses have been by one possession – 52-49 in 2020-21 and 63-61 in 2019-20.
* The Argos won three of the four games a year ago. The Falcons snapped UWF's 4-game win streak with a 52-49 win on Senior Day on Feb. 20, 2021.

ABOUT MONTEVALLO
* UM is 5-6 overall and 1-2 entering Saturday's game at Valdosta State. Prior to a 92-64 win over Cumberland on Dec. 15, the Falcons has gone 1-5 in their last six games. UM did open the season at 3-1, which included a competitive loss to No. 1 Lubbock Christian and an 81-67 win over then-No. 12 Tampa. This is their first road trip since before Thanksgiving.
* Three Falcons average more than 11 points per game. Jordan Jones is at 13.6 ppg with 18 3-pointers made at 40.9 pct., Kiya Sain is posting 11.6 ppg with 19 3-pointers and Shyan Flack has 11.4 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game.
* UM makes 38 pct. from the floor and 30 pct. from outside for 69.3 ppg. They allow 70.8 ppg on 41.5 pct. shooting.
* The Falcons have 13 letterwinners and four starters back from last year's team that went 14-7 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. They were picked to finish fourth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll.
 
UWF-MONTEVALLO SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 33-23 against Montevallo with the first 26 of those games coming when both teams were NAIA members and UM led 21-5 from 1982-94. Since UWF moved up to NCAA in 1994, they are 25-14 against UM. UWF is 18-10 in Pensacola but has lost the last three.
* The Falcons have won the last six in the series, with all four during the conference-only CoVID-19 season a year ago and both meetings in 2019-20. The Argos won a series-high eight-consecutive from 2003-06.
 
YELTON IN TENTH SEASON AT UWF
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her tenth season at UWF and has a 157-107 record with the Argos … She is 214-191 in her 15th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 9-2 against AUM and 4-6 against Montevallo.
 
UWF PICKED 8TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish eighth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Wolves were picked ninth … Defending champion Union earned 10 of 12 first place votes and was picked first for the third-consecutive year. Lee received on first place vote, followed by Valdosta State with the 13th top vote. Montevallo took fourth, while Delta State rounded out the top five with Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama and West Florida sixth through eighth. West Georgia was ninth, while Christian Brothers, Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter also in the list.
