PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the first time since the 2017 season, the University of West Florida Volleyball team earns a spot in the NCAA South Regional final after taking down No. 4 seeded Embry-Riddle in tonight's match.
The top-seeded Argonauts are now in line to face the No. 2 seeded Tampa Spartans in the Regional Final tomorrow which will be a clash between two top ten ranked teams in the nation for what is sure to be an all-out battle between two great teams.
In tonight's match, it was West Florida pulling out two very close wins in the first two sets before the Eagles struck back in set four before ultimately falling in the fourth set.
"That's just good volleyball," stated Head Coach
Melissa Wolter. "I'm really proud of our team for not finding themselves in a position where the moment is too big. I'm very excited that our team will get another chance to play again tomorrow."
Graduate Right Side
Tyler Fezzey was as clutch as they come tonight for the Argonauts totaling 17 kills on an impressive .344 hitting percentage. One of these kills included the set point in the second set which caped off the West Florida comeback after being down six earlier in the set.
Madi Cooler was once again a sparkplug for the Argonaut offense tonight finishing tied with Fezzey for a team high in kills with 17 on her way to another double-double with 11 digs. In addition to the digs on defense, Cooler also handed a team high 27 receptions on the night and did not make one error.
Setter
Taylor Vaneekeren had another all-around match tonight finishing with 46 assists, 5 kills, and 9 digs on the night. Additionally, Vaneekeren had four block assists in the match to add to the teams total 11 blocks against the Eagles.
Rounding out the defensive effort tonight for the Argonauts was
Ashton Marshall who led the team with 16 digs over the four sets. Finishing just shy of Cooler, Marshall also had 22 receptions in the match without committing a single error.
Now advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen tomorrow, West Florida will look for another great showing to try to take home their first NCAA South Regional title in program history. First serve in this championship match against Tampa is set for 6 pm (CST) right here at the UWF Field House.
