Game 1 | Game 2
PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Baseball Team dropped both ends of a double-header against GSC foe, Shorter, on Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field by finals of 3-2 and 9-6.
West Florida now stands at 4-2 on the year while the Hawks improve to 4-2 overall.
Cullan O'Shea was excellent for the Argos at the plate, totaling four hits and four runs batted in during the two contests. The red-shirt junior from Montgomery, Alabama leads the squad with nine RBI's through six games this year.
True Fontenot,
Matthew Estrada and
Dylan Menhennett all had three hits on the day to spark the offense.
Game 1: The Argos were able to get on the board first as Menhennett reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and later scored on a single by O'Shea, putting UWF up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. West Florida would notch their second run of the afternoon in the next inning as shortstop
Miller Hancock singled to the left side of the infield.
After being moved to second on a groundout by catcher
Sam Clement, Hancock would score two batters later as Fontenot ripped a single through the left side, making it 2-0.
Starting pitcher
Evan Floyd cruised through the first five innings of work with ease, as he never faced more than four batters in an inning. Floyd would run into trouble, as Aaron Reardon led-off with a single to right field, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly Bailey Gertsner. Floyd would finish his six innings, allowing two hits, two walks, one run and six strikeouts.
Hunter Lucas would come in relief of Floyd, pitching a scoreless seventh before running into trouble in the eighth.
After the first two runners of the innings reached on two singles, Lucas was lifted for reliever
Brendon Case. A double-steal on the immediate next batter made the score 2-2, before Gertsner sacrifice bunted to score Reardon. UWF would load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Menhennett would fly out to center field.
Game 2: The second game of the double-header started out rough as starting pitcher
Tyler Dowdy, making his second start for UWF, gave up four runs in the first two innings on five hits, with three of the four runs coming in the top of the 2nd inning, as SU led 4-0 quickly.
West Florida would strike back in the bottom of the third as Menhennett would single to start a two-out rally. After Estrada singled up the middle, O'Shea rocked an 0-1 fastball to right center, scoring both Menhennett and Estrada, putting the Argos right back in it.
Shorter would counter in the top of the fourth on a double by Nathaniel Butterworth double to score J.J. Barnes. The Hawks would also score three more in the sixth, on home runs by Jacob Pajer and Butterworth.
The Argonauts threw six different pitchers in the second game of the double-header, as
Jason Roberts and
Robert Sherlock both made their team debut. Roberts threw two innings, allowing three hits and one run, while Sherlock had an impressive outing. The Pensacola, Florida native pitched 2.1 innings, giving up one hit, allowing one run and one walk while striking out five batters in the process.
West Florida made noise in the bottom half of the sixth innings as O'Shea would once get his final RBI of the day, scoring Estrada on a single to make it 8-3. Following a
Jack Schad walk to load the bases, Fontenot hit a screaming single up the middle, scoring both
Jack Copley and O'Shea.
Justin Dunnam, the next batter, singled home Schad to make it 8-6 but the Argos could not push another run across against left-handed pitcher, Kevin Ludden. Ludden earned the win in game one of the double-header, and also earned the save in the second game.
UWF would load the bases yet again in the bottom of the eighth, but it was all for not as Estrada popped to shortstop to end the threat.
West Florida will now hit the road for the first time in the 2021 season as they travel to Spring Hill for a mid-week game on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch from Mobile, Alabama is set for 3 p.m.
