Argos Head To West Georgia For Final Meeting of the Year

The Argonauts will be playing their fourth road game in the last eight days

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team will travel to Carrollton, Ga., to take on West Georgia in a game that could go a long way in determining the postseason fate of both teams. Tuesday's game tips off at 6 p.m. Eastern Time at the UWG Coliseum.
* The game will be the third meeting between the programs in the last 12 days. The Argonauts won both games in Pensacola on Feb. 5 and 6.
 
WHAT'S AT STAKE
* The Argonauts are 7-8 and in fourth place in the GSC East Division with a .468 winning pct. after two tough road losses at Montevallo last weekend. UWF has four games remaining after Tuesday – two at home against AUM this Friday and Saturday and two at No. 10 Valdosta State on Feb. 26-27 to close the regular-season.
* UWG is 5-11 and in fifth place in the division with a .313 league winning pct. and is riding a 6-game losing streak. The Wolves only have two games remaining after the game with UWF, traveling to Shorter this weekend.
* The top four teams in both the East and West Divisions based on winning percentage will qualify for the GSC Championship Tournament.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is 7-8 on the year following a 1-2 road stretch last week. The Argos defeated AUM 70-46 before dropping two close contests at Montevallo – 62-57 on Friday and 72-58 on Saturday.
* Senior F Danielle Norquest leads the team with 12.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and is second with 1.8 steals per game. She is also shooting 44 percent from the floor and 37 percent from outside, making 18-of-49 3-pointers. She leads the team with six double-doubles, including in both UWG games two weeks ago. She enters the UWG game with 834 points and 682 rebounds in 100 games over four seasons at UWF.
* No Argonaut has been more consistent the past eight games than junior G Peyton Lewis. In that stretch, she has averaged 14,5 points – with all eight in double figures – and shot 47 pct. She has connected on 40 pct. from outside, making 19-of-48 3-pointers.
* Junior G Charlotte Ellmore is third on the squad with 9.5 ppg and is second with 25 3-pointers. She has made at least two triples in seven games and at least one in the 13 of the 15 contests.
* UWF is averaging 64.5 ppg as a team on 36.1 pct. shooting. They are allowing 67.7 ppg on 40 pct. shooting.
 
LEWIS BREAKS OUT IN GEORGIA HOMECOMING, CONTINUES STRONG PLAY
* Junior G Peyton Lewis had a standout two games at Shorter 2 1/2 weeks ago, posting career-highs in each game while providing a spark off the bench for the Argos.
* In the last eight games, the junior from Hampton, Ga. has averaged 13.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the floor. She posted back-to-back career-highs, scoring 15 points in the Friday Shorter game and 16 points the next afternoon. She has since matched the career-highs wit 15 against UWG in the first game and then 16 and 17 last week in both games at Montevallo.
* The Kennesaw State transfer has raised her scoring average from 4.0 points to 9.6 ppg in the last three weeks. She had totaled 18 points in seven games before scoring 116 in the last eight. She has score in double figures in all eight games, while leading the team in scoring four times and ranking second the other four games.
 
NORQUEST HAD A MONSTER WEEK AGAINST UWG LAST TIME, HIGHLIGHTED BY 30/20 GAME
* Senior F Danielle Norquest had a dynamite three games two weeks ago, averaging 17.3 points and 14.0 rebounds against Valdosta State and West Georgia. She shot 53 percent overall and was 5-of-12 from outside with two assists and four steals. She was also named the GSC East Division Co-Player of the Week.
* She had two double-doubles in the weekend wins over West Georgia – 12 pts and 12 rebs on Friday with 7p/2r/1a in the 4th qtr to seal it. On Saturday she had 34 points and 20 rebounds in the win, with identical 17p/10r in each half. Her career-high 34 points and career high-tying 20 rebounds rank among this year's national single-game leaders in each category. The scoring mark is tied for the 12th-highest in the D2 ranks, while the rebounds mark is tied for 10th in the division. In the GSC, only CBU's Brynne Lytle's nation-high 45 are more than the Argo forward.
 
FAST STARTS LEAD TO WINS AS ARGOS RUN TOGETHER PAST UWG
* UWF had two of the best first quarter's in the past two years the last two times its faced UWG, scoring 25 points in each game to race out to big leads. On Friday, they used an 18-0 run over the first 8:00 for a 25-4 lead at the qtr. On Saturday, it was more of the same with a 3-point barrage of 6-of-11 in the quarter that led to a 17-4 margin before a 25-10 lead at the quarter break.
 
THIRD QUARTER IS THE MAGIC QUARTER
* UWF is averaging 29.5 points in the first half and 36.1 points after halftime. The best quarter average for the Argos is the third, where they have outscored their opponents 19.1-17.8 on average. UWF is 4-2 on the year when they outscore their opponents in the 10 minutes immediately following halftime. Ironically, they didn't outscore UWG in the third of either game earlier this year but did hold 21-13 and 23-18 edges in the final stanza of both contests.

UWF TIES MODERN SCHOOL 3-POINT RECORD
* After three games this season, UWF had made just 18 3-pointers for 6.0 made per game. The squad has found its stroke in the last 12 contests, connecting on 92 for 7.7 per game, bringing its season average to 7.3 per game, ranking fourth in the GSC overall and second in the East Division behind Lee's 9.2.
* Last month against No. 18 Lee, UWF made 22 triples in the two contests, marking the most in consecutive games since at least the 1993-94 season. The Argos made seven in each game at Shorter last weekend.
* The 12 makes in the 71-62 win were the most since making 12-of-27 against Concordia-Selma on Feb. 23, 2010.

REBOUNDING A STRENGTH FOR UWF ONCE AGAIN
* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2020-21 appears to be no different. UWF leads the GSC at 43.1 rpg and is second in rebound defense, allowing just 34.4 rpg.

* UWG is 5-7 on the season following a pair of home losses to Valdosta State last weekend. The Wolves are averaging 66.4 points per game on 37.3 percent shooting overall. They are third in the GSC East with 40.3 rebounds per contest and have a minus 3.7 rebound margin.
* Juniors Siera Carter and Zaria Bankston lead the team with 10.9 and 9.8 ppg, respectively. Carter has 5-consecutive double-figure contests and has made 15 3-pointers this season. Bankston is fifth in the GSC in assists with 3.8 per game.
 
UWF-UWG SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 31-27 against UWG dating back to the first meeting in 1989-90. The Argos are 15-8 in Pensacola all-time and 8-12 in Carrollton since 2001.
* The Argos are 7-6 in the last 13 games, with the magic number being 63. UWF is 7-0 when scoring at least 63 points and 0-6 when not.
 
YELTON CLAIMS 200TH HEAD COACHING VICTORY
* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her ninth season at UWF and has a 146-101 record at UWF … She is 204-186 in her 14th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* As a head coach, she has 13 wins versus Shorter, 12 against West Alabama and 11 Delta State, West Georgia and Valdosta State. She is 11-10 against the Wolves.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
 
GSC SPLIT INTO DIVISIONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2010-11
* With an abbreviated season due to the uncertainty of health and wellness brought on by the Corona virus pandemic, the Gulf South Conference worked through a number of scheduling scenarios and ultimately settled on a 20-game slate using an East-West model … UWF is in the East with AUM, Lee, Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia … The Argos will face AUM and Montevallo four times, and the other four schools three times … The top four teams from each division will qualify for the GSC Championship.
 
UWF PICKED 6TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Wolves were picked third … Defending champion Lee earned four of six first place votes and was picked first in the East, followed by Montevallo who received the other two first place votes. UWG, VSU and Auburn Montgomery were ahead of the Argos, with Shorter picked seventh.
 
NORQUEST NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Senior F Danielle Norquest was named to the Preseason All-GSC East Division Team in the preseason … The standout from Diamond, Ohio, is coming off a season in which she averaged 14.5 points and 12.9 rebounds per game … She is the third leading returning scorer in the GSC East Division … Last season she led the league and ranked sixth nationally with a school-record-tying 21 double-doubles … Norquest enters the UWG game with 834 points and 682 rebounds in 100 games over four seasons at UWF.
 
WHAT'S BACK FOR THE ARGOS
* UWF returns six letterwinners from a year ago, including five players who started at least 15 games … Senior F Danielle Norquest and junior G Charlotte Ellmore each started all 28 games and combined for 24.2 points, 16.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game … Junior C Aline Fevrier continued to improve in the post with 5.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg … Additionally, redshirt sophomore PG D'Asia Collins returns after missing the entire season with a knee injury.
