UWF Secures GSC Tourney Berth With 82-60 Win at West Georgia

Five Argonauts ran together and scored in double figures

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Five UWF players scored in double figures and two recorded double-doubles as the UWF women's basketball team defeated West Georgia, 82-60, at The UWG Coliseum Tuesday.

With the win, UWF (8-8, 8-8 Gulf South) secured a spot in the GSC Tournament as one of the top four teams from the league's East Division. It also completed a 3-game sweep of the Wolves in 2020-21.

For the second time this season, UWF tied the school single-game record for made 3-pointers in a game with 12 and was dynamite from the free throw line, connecting on 24-of-28 for 85.7 percent.

Peyton Lewis led all scorers with 18 points, including 3-of-7 from behind the arc. Charlotte Ellmore and Danielle Norquest each scored 15 points and grabbed 10 and 13 rebounds, respectively, for a pair of double-doubles. Gabby Brown made numerous hustle plays that led to her scoring 13 points and Fanny Hulmi was perfect from the charity stripe with 10-of-10 on her way to 14 points and six rebounds.

UWG (5-12, 5-12) shot just 38 percent and turned the ball over 19 times. The Argos scored 19 points off those Wolf miscues. Jayda Dooley had 14 points off the bench for UWG.

UWF's starters outscored their UWG counterparts, 64-36. The Argos also held the edge on the glass with a 50-33 margin.

Both teams came out shooting the ball well and trading baskets until UWG took an 8-6 lead. That's when the Argonauts started to lock down on defense. They used a 17-0 run on their way to a 34-15 lead with 4:30 left in the half. But the Wolves fought back and made four treys in the final 3:30 to close within 39-33 heading into halftime.

UWF shot 33.3 percent from both the floor and outside, matching UWF with seven 3-pointers.

After the Wolves took the lead in the first few minutes of the second half, 40-39, UWF regrouped and regained control of the game. The Argos led 50-46 in the closing minute of the third before Brown made a fast break layup and then drained a 3-pointer with 20-seconds left for a 55-46 lead.

From there UWF never took its foot off the gas, outscoring UWG 27-14 in the final 10 minutes.

UWF will return home to the UWF Field House this weekend for a pair of games against Auburn Montgomery. Friday's game will start at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday's is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
