PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida's Women's Tennis team will look to start their 2021 Spring season this Friday when they are scheduled to face Auburn Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama. This comes after their original season opener against Flagler got postponed this past Saturday due to weather.
West Florida enters the weekend ranked #7 in the ITA Preseason poll, and will rely on a mix of experienced players and newcomers to hopefully build on last season's early success.
Some experienced players back for the Argos include
Berta Bonardi,
Irene Recuenco, and
Karolina Silwanowicz who all ended last season ranked in the top 25 for singles play within the South region.
In addition to these returners, the Argos also add three newcomers who will look to contribute immediately. These players include the likes of
Mayumi Saguchi,
Raissa Wagner, and
Sara Yigin who all look to play a big part in this year's success.
About Auburn Montgomery: Like the Argos, Friday will be the season opener for the Warhawks after their first two scheduled matches against Jacksonville State, Middle Georgia State, and Columbus State were all canceled or postponed.
Last season, the Warhawks finished with a record of 5-4, however three of the four losses came against teams ranked in the top ten in the country.
Auburn Montgomery enters the 2021 season with a very experienced roster having returned all seven players from last year's squad including six seniors.
About Lee: The Lady Flames will enter the weekend with an undefeated record of 2-0 before facing West Florida on Saturday. These two wins came against Tennessee Wesleyan and Tusculum who was ranked as the #23 team in the country according to the ITA Team Preseason Poll.
In the shortened 2020 season, Lee finished with a record of 6-5 including a 7-0 loss to the Argos when the two teams squared off on Feb. 23.
Lee returns many experienced players from last year's team including Carley Sickinger, Micaela Maiz, and Lisa Kirr who will all serve as the foundation for this Lady Flames team.
About Shorter: Shorter begins their 2021 season this week as well as they are scheduled to face Lee Thursday and Christian Brothers Saturday before squaring off with the Argos on Sunday.
The Hawks were off to a 2-5 start last season before the season was cut short due to Covid-19.
This will be the first matchup between the Hawks and the Argos since Feb. 24, 2019 when the Argos came out with a 7-0 victory.
Weekend Schedule: Over the three-day road trip, the Argos are scheduled to play Auburn Montgomery on February 19 at 1 PM, Lee on February 20 at 9 AM, and Shorter on February 21 at 9 AM.
