Men’s Tennis Wins Hard-Fought Match Against the Warhawks

Argos fight back from down 3-2 to pull out the victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Florida's Men's Tennis team got off to a good start to their season Friday afternoon edging out conference foe Auburn Montgomery 4-3 in their season opener.

Beginning with doubles play, the Argos were able to win all three of their matchups securing the lone doubles point that proved to be the deciding factor in today's match.

"We were able to pull out the doubles point," says Head Coach Derrick Racine. "All the doubles were very close and we prevailed in all three."

Salvador Bandeira and Gabriel Nery started things off winning 6-2 over David Mulas and Jonathan Judy-Hansen from the No. 3 position.

The remaining two doubles matches were both forced into tiebreakers before the Argos ultimately won 7-6 in both. Nicolas Lecoutre and newcomer William Shkrob were able to take down David Rieme and Joao Guariente playing from the No. 2 position to secure the point. Serdar Bojadjiev and Adam Svensson secured the sweep by beating Muhamad Bedwan and Nino Portugal 7-4 in the tiebreaker to wrap-up the doubles portion.

Singles play saw the Warhawks surge back and win three of the first four singles points from the top four positions in our lineup. Nicolas Lecoutre was the only Argo to pick up a point in the top of the lineup beating Joao Guariente 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 3 position.

With the score now being 3-2 in favor of the Warhawks, it was now up to Adam Svensson and Juan Cabrera to try to secure the win for the Argos. Svensson was the first to finish his match winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 over David Mulas tying the score up at 3-3. Cabrera then rode the momentum of Svensson's win and picked up a clutch victory in his match finishing 6-3, 6-1 over Giovanni Bellio and securing the win for West Florida.

"Singles were super tough and we started down a set in almost all the matches," says Coach Racine. "The guys fought super hard and worked their way back into the second sets. At one point it looked like we would surely lose but somehow they found a way to win. That's a sign of a good team."

The Argos now move to 1-0 on the season and will look to build on this momentum when they face-off against Lee tomorrow at 9AM from the Devos Tennis Center in Cleveland, Tennessee.
