Women’s Tennis Starts 2021 Campaign with Victory Over Auburn Montgomery

Argos win all six points from singles play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Florida's women's team was able to secure their first win of the 2021 Spring season on Friday when they took down Auburn Montgomery 6-1 in both team's season opener.

Starting with doubles, the Argos got off to a bit of a sluggish start dropping all three matches to the Warhawks securing AUM the lone doubles point.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin fell 6-4 to Sofia Navarro and Maria Casas in their first pairing as UWF teammates. Irene Recuenco and Raissa Wagner also fell 6-4 from the No. 2 position while Manon Meulenberg and Samantha Echevarria fell 6-1 playing from the No. 3 position.

"We started off a little slow in doubles and had trouble getting back in the matches," stated Head Coach Derrick Racine. "However, the girls rebounded great in singles and really jumped off to great starts in all matches."

Rebound they did, as the Argos won all six singles points to secure a victory and move to 1-0 on the year. Bonardi and Recuenco continued their winning ways here at UWF each winning in straight sets to get the Argos started. Yigin secured her first collegiate victory winning 6-3, 6-3 over Maria Casas as the No.4 singles player. Silwanowicz, Echevarria, and Wagner all followed suit winning each of their matches including a 10-4 tiebreaker win for Wagner in her first victory at UWF.

Coach Racine noted this great singles turnaround stating, "It was a great effort and it was a good win against a quality team".

West Florida will be right back at it tomorrow when they square off against Lee at 9AM from the Devos Tennis Center in Cleveland, Tennessee.
