PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered through a tough shooting game and lost to Auburn Montgomery, 52-49, at the UWF Field House on Saturday.
Amara Newsom came off the bench to lead the Argonaut offense, finishing with a career-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Alex Haymon added eight points and six rebounds.
UWF (9-9, 9-9 Gulf South) shot 27 percent and made just four 3-pointers.
AUM (2-10, 2-10) was led by Catlin Carter's 12 points and six rebounds. Jessika Milton made three triples and contributed 11 points off the bench. The Warhawks outrebounded the Argos 40-39.
AUM opened the second with a pair of threes from Milton and a fast break layup to close to within 15-14. The Argos regained momentum with some unexpected scoring from Newsom. The freshman had a career-high nine points and three rebounds in six minutes as UWF built the lead back to a 30-22 margin before taking a 32-23 lead into the locker room.
Just like on Friday, AUM came out and scored the first five points of the second half, forcing a UWF timeout. The Warhawks outscored the Argos 19-5 in the period to stake a 42-37 lead heading into the fourth.
UWF trailed by six on three occasions late and drew to within a basket each time. The Argos had an opportunity to tie the game on the final possession but
Peyton Lewis' three from the top of the key was off the mark.
UWF will conclude the regular season next weekend when it travels to No. 10 ranked Valdosta State (16-2, 16-2) on Friday and Saturday.
