Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Argonauts Complete Season Opening Road trip with Win Over Shorter

Women did not drop any singles point during three-match stretch

Rome, Ga. – In an early morning match against Gulf South Conference opponent Shorter, UWF Women's Tennis once again came out victorious taking down the Hawks 6-1 in Rome, Georgia. This win now moves the Argos to 3-0 overall and completes the first road trip of the 2021 Spring season.

It was yet again another difficult day for the Argos in doubles as they dropped two out of the three matches to give Shorter their lone point of the day. With no fall season to build chemistry as well as some players nursing injuries, West Florida will continue to try to find their rhythm in doubles as the season progresses.

However, Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin have started to find their grove beating Isabel Nikolaeva and Amelie Fryer 7-6 to improve to 2-1 in doubles on the short season.

One area of play that the UWF Women's team shined in over this past weekend was in their singles matches going a perfect 18-0 over the three-day span. This included a perfect 6-0 on Sunday where every position won in straight sets.

Irene Recuenco won her first match from the No. 1 position on the season winning 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 3-0 on the season in singles. The Freshman Yigin continues to impress in her first year as an Argo winning once again to stay unbeaten at the college level. To finish out singles play, Samantha Echevarria takes down Andrea Medel 6-1, 6-1, both Raissa Wagner and Manon Meulenberg win 6-1, 6-0, while Isabela Fioravanti wins 6-3, 6-0 to round out the lineup.

"It's always nice to close out a tough road trip with a win," stated Head Coach Derrick Racine. "We look forward to a couple days of rest and easy practice before we head out to Oklahoma for the ITA National Team Indoors this next weekend."

After the successful start to the season, the Argos will be put to the test this upcoming weekend when they travel to Oklahoma City to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

This championship features the top seven teams in all Division II Women's tennis and will span from Feb. 26-28 from the Edmond Center Court. This will be the first time the UWF women's team will compete in this prestigious event and after a successful start to the year, expectations are high going into the weekend.
