OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – West Florida suffered their first loss of their spring season on Friday dropping a highly competitive match against the #13 ranked Angelo State University. This match was the first game of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship and neither team wasted any time setting the stage for the big event.
Beginning with doubles, the Argos were able to pick up their first point of the year getting two huge victories from the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. It was
Berta Bonardi and reigning GSC Freshman of the Week
Sara Yigin teaming up once again from the No. 1 position, securing their third victory in a row with a 6-2 win over Gonzales and Ovcina of Angelo State.
Irene Recuenco and
Manon Meulenberg were able to win their first doubles match as a pair this season taking down Ayda Guler and Maria Delgadillo 6-4 from the No. 3 position.
"We got things going right away and played very well in doubles," said Head Coach
Derrick Racine. "This was the first match so far that we have won the doubles point."
With the doubles point secured,
Karolina Silwanowicz and partner
Samantha Echevarria didn't need to finish their match and finished 4-4 with Becht and Gubbels from the No. 2 position.
Singles play saw the competition heat up as both teams came out swinging looking to start their weekend off on the right foot.
Recuenco was the first to finish for the Argos falling to Ena Ovcina 2-6, 2-6 drawing the score to one all. It was then Yigin and Bonardi who finished next each continuing their impressive start to the season and picking up victories to bring the Argonauts within one point of the victory.
Out of the remaining three matches,
Raissa Wagner was the first to conclude as she fell for the first time this season 1-6, 4-6 from the No. 6 position. Echevarria playing as the No. 5 player nearly mounted a huge comeback but fell in a tiebreaker to drop her match in straight sets as well.
With the game now in the hands of Silwanowicz and Dianela Rodriguez from the No. 3 match, both players put everything they had in a three-set thriller. Rodriguez came out victorious in the first set 4-6 before Silwanowicz bounced back in the second set winning 6-3. In the decisive third-set both players took turns trading points on serves before Rodriguez and Angelo State ultimately took the set and the victory.
"In singles, all of the matches were super close and they just edged us out in the final match," stated Coach Racine. "We are just working hard to get better each match and also hoping to get some of our girls healthy and back in the lineup. It's a long season so we have to keep our heads up and continue improving every week."
UWF will be back tomorrow at 8 AM (CST) from the ITA Indoor Championship when they will take on the loser of the Columbus State, Southwest Baptist match.
