Oklahoma City, Okla. – West Florida wasted no time getting things started in the 2021 ITA National Team Indoor Championship today beating familiar foe Delta State 4-0 to start their weekend. This improves the Argos season record to 4-0 on the year and gives them their first win over a ranked opponent on the young season.
It was more of the same in doubles play as the Argos picked up victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the point.
Gabriel Nery and
Salvador Bandeira remained undefeated as a pair winning 6-2 over the #14 ranked pair in the nation Hugo Stroppiana and Mason Vice.
Nicolas Lecoutre and
William Shkrob were the next pair to finish defeating Leo De Sousa and Come Bracaval 6-4 to give the Argos a 1-0 lead.
Due to the Argonauts securing the doubles portion,
Serdar Bojadjiev and
Adam Svensson's match from the No. 1 doubles position went unfinished.
"The guys played great in doubles," said Head Coach
Derrick Racine. "It was super close on every court and we had to play strong physically and mentally to prevail with the point."
Singles play saw West Florida continue to roll as the Argos won three quick matches to get the 4-0 victory.
Juan Cabrera stayed unbeaten in singles winning 6-1, 6-2 over Emiliano del Arco from the No. 6 position. Bojadjiev was the next to finish winning 6-3, 6-2 over the #26 ranked Emilr Le Terrier at the No. 1 position. Svensson secured the final point needed defeating Bracacal 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 5 position.
Bandeira, Lecoutre, and Motta had each all won the first set of their matches before having their matches go unfinished due to the Argonauts securing the four points needed to win.
"In singles, the guys were super focused and we jumped all over them from the first point of each match," stated Coach Racine. "The guys are starting to fire on all cylinders and getting more and more confident each match."
West Florida now advances in the winner's bracket of the Indoor Championship and will square off with the #10 ranked University of Indianapolis tomorrow at 11:15 AM (CST).
