Women’s Tennis Picks up Dominant Win Over #5 Columbus State

This marked the Argos first win over the Cougars since the 2016 season

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The West Florida Women's Tennis Team secured their first win of the 2021 ITA National Team Indoor Championship knocking off #5 Columbus State 4-0 in today's match. This moves the Argos to a season record of 4-1 and gives them their first win over perineal powerhouse Columbus State since the 2016 season.

Action once again started bright and early for the Argos drawing the 8 AM game for the second consecutive match. However, this was no problem for West Florida as they came out and immediately set the tone for the match in doubles play.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin continued their hot streak as a pairing picking up a 6-3 win from the No. 1 position to make it four straight victories in a row as a pair. Karolina Silwanowicz and Samantha Echevarria picked up their first win as a pairing knocking off Abrile/Ramirez Goncalves 6-3 from the No. 2 position.

Irene Recuenco and Manon Meulenberg weren't able to come out ahead in their match, but with the two other matches secured the Argos headed to Singles play up 1-0 over the Cougars.

Singles play saw West Florida continue the momentum from doubles with five of the Argonauts six players winning the first set of their matches.

Recuenco was the first to wrap-up picking up an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over #10 Luise Sachs from the No. 2 position. Next to finish was Bonardi who knocked off another ranked opponent beating #17 Beatriz Lopez 6-0, 6-1 to remain unbeaten on the year. West Florida wrapped up the match with Yigin securing a 6-1, 6-1 win from the No. 4 position as she continues her impressive start to her UWF career.

The remaining three matches all went unfinished, but the Argos held strong positions in all of them. Silwanowicz, playing from the No. 3 position, dropped her first set 4-6 but was up 4-3 in set two when it concluded. Echevarria held a solid 6-2, 2-0 lead from the No. 5 position, and Raissa Wagner had a 6-1, 4-1 lead at the No. 6 position.

West Florida, who is now 1-1 in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, will move onto Sunday to face the winner of Midwestern State and Flagler in what will serve as the fifth-place game for the tournament.

This match is scheduled to be played at 11:15 AM (CST) and as always be sure to keep an eye on social media and GoArgos.com for any updates and results for tomorrow's match.
