Game 1 | Game 2
PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF Baseball got a strong start from starting pitcher
Ryan Brewer in a 4-1 victory in the first game, before Alabama Huntsville prevailed 12-1 in game two of a double-header on Saturday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.
The games move the Argonauts to 7-4 on the year while the split advances the Chargers to 5-7. The teams will meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series rubber-match.
Jack Schad,
Dylan Menhennett and
Matthew Estrada all had RBI's for the Argos on the day, with
True Fontenot, Menhennett and
Justin Dunnam all having multi-hit games.Â
Bryant Harris Jr. and
Sam Clement added to the 12 hits on the day for UWF.
Game 1: West Florida got on the board first, as Dunnam opened the top of the 2nd inning with a double down the right field line. In the next at-bat,
Miller Hancock bunted down the third base line to force a throwing error on the UAH catcher. Dunnam came around from second on the error, giving the Argonauts a 1-0 advantage. UWF would score again in the top of the third, as Fontenot led of the inning with a single to right field.
After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Fontenot scored on a RBI single by Menhennett through the left side. That was all the run support Brewer would need in the contest, as he threw eight and two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. Inducing 11 fly-outs and 14 ground-outs, Brewer was efficient on the afternoon as he only had to throw 106 pitches through the duration of the outing.
For the season, Brewer lowered his earned run average to 2.92, while his 24.1 innings pitched is the fifth most in the Gulf South Conference. Brewer also is 10th in the GSC with 20 strikeouts on the year.
UWF struck again in the fourth inning, as Hancock singled to center in the lead-off spot. Schad, the next batter, crushed a 2-2 pitch to deep center field, registering his first home-run as an Argonaut as the team held a commanding four-run lead.
While the Argos were held scoreless through the rest of the contest, Brewer continued to cruise through eight innings. After getting two quick outs to open the ninth, Landon Ezzell doubled to left field to put a runner on base for UAH. Following a RBI single by Tyler McCown to make the game 4-1, UWF Head Coach brought in closer
Brendon Case to finish off the game.
After getting into a loaded bases jam with still two outs, Case induced a groundout to Fontenot at third base to end the game and give the Argos a 4-1 victory. Case earned his GSC-leading third save in the process.
Game 2:Â The second game played out much differently as UAH jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead with three runs off starter
Robert Sherlock, who did not register an out before being replaced by reliever
Josh Pahlad. Â
West Florida did battle back in the top of the third on a
Matthew Estrada single that scored
Sam Clement, but that would be all the Argonauts would score off Charger starter, Dylan Murphy.
Murphy pitched a seven-inning, complete game for Alabama Huntsville as he allowed one run on five hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. UAH scored three more times in the bottom of the third to make it 9-1. A RBI single in the bottom of the fourth made it 10-1, before Garrett Bodine hit a homer down the right-field line in the bottom of the fifth to ice the game.
UWF used three different pitchers in relief of Sherlock, as Pahlad,
Hunter Lucas and
Sean Means all saw action. The three hurlers combined for eight strikeouts, with Means accounting for four of them in his two innings of no-hit ball.
