Men’s Tennis Finishes Strong at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship

Argos finish third in tournament including two wins over ranked teams

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – After a heartbreaking loss yesterday, the West Florida Men's Tennis team was able to bounce back today beating #7 Drury 4-0 in their final match of the weekend. The Argos now have a 5-1 record on the season and end up third place in their second appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

In doubles, Gabriel Nery and partner Salvador Bandeira continued their impressive start to the season winning 6-3 from the No. 2 position to remain unbeaten on the year. Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob picked up the others double victory winning 6-2 from the No. 3 position to secure the point.

Serdar Bojadjiev and partner Adam Svensson were knotted up in a close 4-4 match before it went unfinished due to the Argos securing the point.

"Our doubles were very strong," stated Head Coach Derrick Racine. "I feel like we have a great shot to take the doubles point from any team in the country."

Singles play saw the Argonauts jump out to a fast start picking up first set wins in five of the six matches.

Bandeira picked up a huge point from the No. 2 position winning 6-0, 6-2 over Garin-Michaud of Drury. Lecoutre picked up the next point in the match securing the 6-3, 6-2 victory from the No. 3 position. The final point for the Argos came from Juan Cabrera as he stayed dominant in singles play winning 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 5 position.

"In singles it's just a matter of time until everyone gets together," said Coach Racine. "It's great to cap off the weekend with a convincing 4-0 win over the #7 ranked team in the country."

The Argos finished 2-1 on the weekend and will now head back home from their second ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Here is what coach Racine had to say about the weekend as well as the tournament as a whole.

"The men had a great weekend," stated Coach Racine. "It is not easy adjusting to indoors and the guys did an amazing job of fighting hard and staying in points. I want to thank our administration and our boosters because without them we would have never had this opportunity to compete. This type of competition will give us the edge we need when we compete later this Spring for GSC and NCAA National Championships."

West Florida will be off for a little over a week before their next match when they take on Keiser University on March 12 here at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
