Argos Take Win Streak On the Road, Face AUM Tuesday

UWF has won four of its last six games

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Coming off a pair of home wins over the weekend, the UWF women's basketball team will hit the road for its next three contests. The first will be on Tuesday at Auburn-Montgomery at 6 p.m. at the AUM Gymnasium.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF improved to 6-6 overall with a pair of single-digit wins over West Georgia on Friday and Saturday.
* Senior F Danielle Norquest leads the team with 13.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. She is also shooting 46 percent from the floor and 43 percent from outside, making 17-of-40 3-pointers. She leads the team with five double-doubles, including both games last weekend.
* Junior G Charlotte Ellmore is second on the squad with 10.3 ppg and leads the team lead with 19 3-pointers. She has made at least two triples in seven games and at least one in the 11 of the 12 contests.
* No Argonaut has been more consistent the past two weeks than junior G Peyton Lewis. In the last five games, she has averaged 14.0 points – with all five games in double figures – and shot 40 pct. from outside, making 10-of-25 3-pointers. She had connected on 10-of-22 before missing all three attempts on Saturday.
* UWF is averaging 65.3 ppg as a team on 36.0 pct. shooting. They are allowing 69.6 ppg on 43 pct. shooting.
 
NORQUEST HAS MONSTER WEEK, HIGHLIGHTED BY 30/20 GAME
* Senior F Danielle Norquest had a dynamite three games last week, averaging 17.3 points and 14.0 rebounds against Valdosta State and West Georgia. She shot 53 percent overall and was 5-of-12 from outside with two assists and four steals.
* She had two double-doubles in the weekend wins over West Georgia – 12 pts and 12 rebs on Friday with 7p/2r/1a in the 4t qtr to seal it. On Saturday she had 34 points and 20 rebounds in the win, with identical 17p/10r in each half. Her career-high 34 points and career high-tying 20 rebounds rank among this year's national single-game leaders in each category. The scoring mark is tied for the 12th-highest in the D2 ranks, while the rebounds mark is tied for 10th in the division. In the GSC, only CBU's Brynne Lytle's nation-high 45 are more than the Argo forward.
 
FAST STARTS LEAD TO WINS AS ARGOS RUN TOGETHER PAST UWG
* UWF had two of the best first quarter's in the past two years over the weekend, scoring 25 points in each game to race out to big leads. On Friday, they used an 18-0 run over the first 8:00 for a 25-4 lead at the qtr. On Saturday, it was more of the same with a 3-point barrage of 6-of-11 in the quarter that led to a 17-4 margin before a 25-10 lead at the quarter break.
 
THIRD QUARTER IS THE MAGIC QUARTER
* UWF is averaging 29.3 points in the first half and 36.0 points after halftime. The best quarter average for the Argos is the third, where they have outscored their opponents 18.7-17.8 on average. UWF is 3-2 on the year when they outscore their opponents in the 10 minutes immediately following halftime. Ironically, they didn't outscore UWG in the third of either game last weekend but did hold 21-13 and 23-18 edges in the final stanza of both contests.

UWF TIES MODERN SCHOOL 3-POINT RECORD
* After three games this season, UWF had made just 18 3-pointers for 6.0 made per game. The squad has found its stroke in the last nine contests, connecting on 74 for 8.2 per game, bringing its season average to 7.7 per game, ranking fourth in the GSC overall and second in the East Division behind Lee's 9.2.
* Jan. 22-23 against No. 18 Lee, UWF made 22 triples, marking the most in consecutive games since at least the 1993-94 season. The Argos made 14 combined at Shorter and 15 at home against West Georgia the last two weekends.
* The school-record tying 12 makes in the 71-62 win over Lee were the most since making 12-of-27 against Concordia-Selma on Feb. 23, 2010.

REBOUNDING A STRENGTH FOR UWF ONCE AGAIN
* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2020-21 appears to be no different. UWF ranks second in the GSC at 42.3 rpg and is third in rebound defense, allowing just 34.0 rpg.

* The Argonauts are 584-512 all-time and 237-182 in GSC play … UWF has won three East Division and one overall regular-season titles, along with the 2013-14 GSC Tournament crown … The Argos have played in six NCAA Regional Tournaments – including four in the last seven years – and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017 with a school-record 28 victories … Prior to last year's 8-win campaign, UWF had averaged 21 wins in the previous six seasons.
 
ABOUT AUM
* AUM enters the game at 0-6 on the season, having played just once since the team's first meeting on Jan. 12. The Warhawks are coming off a stretch where their last three games have been postponed due to GSC COVID-19 protocols.
* Junior Jordan Brewster and senior Catlin Carter lead the team with 14.0 and 10.8 points per game, respectively. Brewster is one of the better outside shooters in the GSC and has made 18 of the team's 36 triples.
* AUM is shooting 35 percent from the floor and averaging a GSC-low 53.2 ppg. Opponents are getting to the free throw line an average of 20 times per game as well – UWF was 16-of-19 in the first matchup.
 
UWF-AUM SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 11-15 all-time against AUM dating back to the 1986-87 season. The majority of the games were played in the 1980s and 90s when both teams were NAIA members.
* Since resuming the series in 2016, UWF is 7-1 against AUM, including a 5-0 mark in Montgomery.
* Last month, UWF claimed a 64-59 win using a strong team defensive effort to allow a season-low points by. An opponent. Danielle Norquest had 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals to lead UWF, while Charlotte Ellmore finished with 14 points and a pair of triples. Freshman Alex Haymon came off the bench to shoot 4-for-9 for 10 points and seven boards in 19 minutes.
 
YELTON CLAIMS 200TH HEAD COACHING VICTORY
* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her ninth season at UWF and has a 145-99 record at UWF … She is 203-184 in her 14th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* As a head coach, she has 13 wins versus Shorter, 12 against West Alabama and 11 against both Delta State and Valdosta State.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
 
GSC SPLIT INTO DIVISIONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2010-11
* With an abbreviated season due to the uncertainty of health and wellness brought on by the Corona virus pandemic, the Gulf South Conference worked through a number of scheduling scenarios and ultimately settled on a 20-game slate using an East-West model … UWF is in the East with AUM, Lee, Montevallo, Shorter, Valdosta State and West Georgia … The Argos will face AUM and Montevallo four times, and the other four schools three times … The top four teams from each division will qualify for the GSC Championship.
 
UWF PICKED 6TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll … Defending champion Lee earned four of six first place votes and was picked first in the East, followed by Montevallo who received the other two first place votes. West Georgia, Valdosta State and Auburn Montgomery were ahead of the Argos, with Shorter picked seventh.
 
NORQUEST NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Senior F Danielle Norquest was named to the Preseason All-GSC East Division Team in the preseason … The standout from Diamond, Ohio, is coming off a season in which she averaged 14.5 points and 12.9 rebounds per game … She is the third leading returning scorer in the GSC East Division … Last season she led the league and ranked sixth nationally with a school-record-tying 21 double-doubles … Norquest enters the AUM game with 805 points and 644 rebounds in three-plus seasons at UWF.
 
WHAT'S BACK FOR THE ARGOS
* UWF returns six letterwinners from a year ago, including five players who started at least 15 games … Senior F Danielle Norquest and junior G Charlotte Ellmore each started all 28 games and combined for 24.2 points, 16.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game … Junior C Aline Fevrier continued to improve in the post with 5.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg … Additionally, redshirt sophomore PG D'Asia Collins returns after missing the entire season with a knee injury.
