Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Strong Play from the Top of the Lineup Not Enough to Take Down Keiser

Argos fall to 5-2 on the season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In their first match in a little over a week, the West Florida Women's Tennis team couldn't put it all together today falling 4-2 to NAIA powerhouse in Keiser. Now 5-2 on the season, the Argonauts will look to build on today's performance going further on the year.

After taking the lone doubles point in all three matches from the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the Argonauts were unable to keep their winning streak alive today dropping two out of the three matches.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin fought hard as the No. 1 pairing today pulling out a 6-2 victory to improve to 6-1 as a pair on the season. Karolina Silwanowicz and Samantha Echevarria teamed up from the No. 2 position but were unable to come out ahead falling 2-6 in their match. In the final pairing, Irene Recuenco and Manon Meulenberg dropped a close match 3-6 as the No. 3 pairing.

"I don't think we played as good as doubles as we had been playing," Head Coach Derrick Racine noticed. "At the Indoor we played really good doubles, but today we weren't really on our game however there will be those days and you just have to work through them."

Singles play saw the Argos dominate from the top of the lineup, but some difficult matches from the bottom half were enough to seal the victory for Keiser.

Bonardi, who is currently ranked as the No. 1 singles player in Division II, had no issues from the No. 1 spot winning 6-0, 6-0 in her match. Recuenco saw similar success from the No. 2 position wining 6-3, 6-1 to put the Argos ahead 2-1 in the match.

In the final matches, Silwanowicz dropped a very competitive match from the 4-6, 3-6 from the No. 3 position to tie the overall score at two. Echevarria playing from the No. 5 position was unable to get much going today falling 0-6, 3-6 in her match. From the No. 6 position, Meulenberg was unable to get the Argos back on track as she fell 3-6, 1-6 to seal it for the Seahawks. Yigin's match from the No. 4 position went unfinished due to Keiser securing the victory.

"We won at one and two fairly handily," Coach Racine stated. "Three through six were all tough matches for us. However, these are good matches for us because due to the shortened season these tough matches really go a long way down the road for us."

The Argonauts will be back in action on Sunday when they continue their home stretch with a game against Xavier (La.) at 10 AM from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
