Newcomers Shine in West Florida’s Victory over Xavier (La.)

Argos take five out of the six singles points on the day

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In dominant fashion, the West Florida Women's Tennis team picked up a big win over Xavier University of Louisiana on Sunday winning 6-1 over the Gold Nuggets. The Argos now improve to 6-2 on the year with a big match against the number one team in the nation looming on Thursday from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

The action started in doubles play where the Argonauts came out swing taking two out of the three matches to come out with the lone point.

Irene Recuenco and partner Manon Meulenberg got the Argos started winning 6-1 from the No. 3 position. The next victory came from Karolina Silwanowicz and Samantha Echevarria who won 6-4 from the No. 2 position to give West Florida the lead going into singles. Berta Bonardi and partner Sara Yigin did not finish their match from the No. 1 position as UWF had already secured the point.

"The women are still battling a few injuries and sickness," Head Coach Derrick Racine noted. "However, they still came out strong in doubles and won the point."

Singles play saw the Argonauts build on this early momentum with five of the six positions picking up points on the day.

Bonardi was locked-in from the No. 1 position winning 6-0, 6-1 to remain unbeaten on the year. Recuenco continued her strong weekend from the No. 2 position winning 7-5, 6-3 in her match and Echevarria also won in straight sets from the No. 4 position.

Raissa Wagner and Isabela Fioravanti shined from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions today stepping up due to injuries and both winning in straight sets. Wagner picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory in her match from the No. 5 position while Fioravanti won 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 6 spot.

"In singles, we had to dive deep into our lineup with a few girls out for today's match," Coach Racine stated. "We were able to pick up some big wins from the bottom of the lineup that helped propel us to the victory today."

West Florida now looks towards Thursday when the #1 ranked University of Indianapolis comes to town in what will be a clash of top teams here in Pensacola. The match will start at 1 PM on Thursday and all matches will be played here at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
