Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Argonauts Fall to Top-Ranked University of Indianapolis

West Florida now moves to 6-3 on the season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a tough day for the West Florida Women's Tennis Team, as they fell 7-0 to the #1 ranked University of Indianapolis. After moving some players around due to injury, the Argonauts couldn't get the momentum rolling and fell to the Greyhounds for their third loss of the season.

Starting with doubles, the Argonauts put up an excellent effort but ultimately fell from all three positions.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin played again from the No. 1 position, but were unable to top the #3 ranked doubles pair falling 6-3 in their match. Karolina Silwanowicz and partner Samantha Echevarria dropped a close match in a tiebreaker from the No. 2 position. Manon Meulenberg alongside Irene Recuenco were the final pairing to wrap up falling 7-5 from the No. 3 position.

Singles play saw a premier Division II matchup from the No. 1 court as Bonardi who is the top-ranked singles player squared off Nikol Alekseeva who is ranked second.

From the No. 1 match, Alekseeva jumped ahead early on Bonardi and controlled most of the match until walking away with the 6-2, 6-4 victory over Bonardi. This marks just the second loss in Bonardi's collegiate career as she is now 27-2 as an Argonaut.

In the other singles matches the Argos fought hard in many of them but couldn't muster up enough to come away with a win.

Recuenco took the first set in her match but ultimately fell 6-1, 1-6, 0-6 from the No. 2 position. Silwanowicz playing from the No. 3 position fell 3-6, 1-6 against Alina Kislitskaya in her match. Echevarria dropped her match 3-6, 0-6 from the No. 4 position. Meulenberg dropped a first-set tiebreaker and wasn't able to bounce back in set two falling 6-7, 2-6 from the No. 6 position.

Newcomer Raissa Wagner got the call from the No. 5 position today and nearly came out with a victory fighting back in the second set before ultimately losing 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker.

"We lost to a very good team today but played them much closer than what the score indicated," Head Coach Derrick Racine stated. "I saw some very positive things today from our team and we keep improving each match. We can defiantly compete amongst the top teams in the nation."

West Florida will now get a few days off before another ranked match here at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex when #16 West Alabama comes to town next Tuesday. This match is scheduled to start at 1 PM and will start the run of four-straight GSC matches to close out March.
