PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida Women's Tennis team will take on the number one ranked University of Indianapolis this Thursday from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex in what will be a clash of two top-ten teams. As the sixth-ranked team themselves, the Argonauts are looking to take down the Greyhounds to secure a huge win for this West Florida team.
Both of these programs are off to excellent starts to their 2021 campaign. West Florida is currently sitting at 6-2 on the year with two top-25 wins as well as three conference wins to this point. UINDY has a record of 8-0 including six wins over ranked opponents and a first-place finish from the ITA National Team Indoor Championship a few weekends ago.
As representatives in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship themselves, the Argonauts and Greyhounds avoided a meeting in Oklahoma City but will get a chance to take on each other Thursday when the two teams meet.
About the Argos – In the latest ITA team rankings, West Florida saw a slight bump in the standings moving from seventh to sixth in the nation. This comes after a 6-2 record to start the season including the Argos impressive end to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship where they took down the #5 and #10 ranked teams in the nation.
Beginning with doubles play, West Florida has had a difficult time finding their footing going 11-10 as a team to start the season. However,
Berta Bonardi and
Sara Yigin have been a bright spot of the double's lineup going 6-1 as a pairing including wins in their last six matches.
Singles play has been the Argonauts strong suit this season with the team going 33-10 during the eight matches on the year. Bonardi has continued her dominance at the Division II level starting 7-0 on the season to solidify her spot as the number one player at the Division II level. Freshman
Sara Yigin has also shined early in her career going 6-0 in her first matches mainly playing from the No. 4 position.
About the Greyhounds - As one of the biggest risers in the latest ITA team rankings, the Greyhounds jumped from fourth place to first place after a strong performance from the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
In doubles, the Greyhounds have won the lone point in every match on the season and have only lost one match to this point in the year. Bolstered by the number three pairing in the nation in Nikol Alexeeva and Anna Novikova, the Greyhounds are a team that attacks early and heads to singles play usually with an advantage.
Singles play sees UINDY shine even greater than doubles as the Greyhounds are 35-4 on the year as a team. Lead by the #2 ranked singles player in the nation, the Greyhounds have a total of three players ranked in the top-25 in the nation for singles play.
