PENSACOLA, Fla. – On another picture-perfect day from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex, the West Florida Men's Tennis team did just enough to take down the fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis. Winning 4-3 on the day, the Argonauts now improve to 7-2 on the season including three wins over ranked opponents already on the year.
Doubles is where the Argonauts found their separation in this match, winning from two out of the three positions to secure the crucial lone point from doubles play.
Salvador Bandeira and partner
Gabriel Nery were at it once again as the No. 1 pairing picking up a 6-2 victory to continue their dominance as a pair.
Nicolas Lecoutre and
Lluis Miralles Miro paired up for the first time this season and picked up a huge 6-3 victory from the No. 3 position.
Serdar Bojadjiev and partner
Adam Svensson were unable to come out victorious in their match from the No. 2 position, but the Argos had already secured the lone point and headed to singles with the 1-0 advantage.
"It was once again a super close match, but this time we came out on top," stated Head Coach
Derrick Racine. "The doubles point proved to be key and that was the main difference in the match."
In singles, the Argonauts played much better today against the Greyhounds than when they faced them earlier in the year from Oklahoma City. Winning three out of the six points, West Florida fought hard from all six positions to challenge the Greyhounds and ultimately pick up the victory.
From the No. 1 position, Bojadjiev did a phenomenal job silencing the #12 player in the country winning 6-3, 6-2 from his match. Bandeira picked up another win from the No. 3 position in a similar fashion, finishing 6-3, 6-2 to secure another point for the Argos. The final victory of the day came from
Juan Cabrera who won 7-5, 6-1 from the No. 4 position to put West Florida up for good against UINDY.
Lecoutre, Svensson, and Nery all fell in their singles matches, however, Lecoutre and Nery each were in great positions to go ahead before they both fell in the decisive third set.
"All the singles matches were super close and we got a couple key wins from Serdar, Salvador, and Cabrera," Coach Racine remarked. "The guys have been working super hard and it's really starting to pay off."
This win marks the halfway point for the West Florida team as they currently sit 7-2 on the year with only nine matches left in the regular season.
The road won't get any easier for the Argos coming up as they will play a doubleheader on Saturday against UT Tyler and Spring Hill before starting back up with conference play when #22 West Alabama comes to town next Tuesday.
