Argos Pick Up Two More Wins Today to Stay Perfect on the Week

West Florida now improves to 9-2 after wins against UT Tyler and Spring Hill today

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Coming off of a huge victory against fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis on Thursday, the West Florida Men's Tennis Team continued their success on Saturday taking down UT Tyler and Spring Hill in back-to-back matches.

In the first match of the day, the Argonauts took down UT Tyler 5-0 from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex before coming right back to defeat Spring Hill 6-1 in the second match. These wins move West Florida to 9-2 on the year and have them riding high as they head to the second half of their season.

About the UT Tyler Match: Playing in the early match of the day, the Argonauts were able to fend off an early push from the Patriots to win 5-0 in this one.

The doubles point went to the Argos yet again in this match as they secured victories in two out of the three positions to secure the lone point for the tenth time this season.

Holding steady as the Argonauts No. 1 pairing, Salvador Banderia, and partner Gabriel Nery once again came out victorious picking up a 6-4 win in their match. Nicolas Lecoutre and partner William Shkrob were back at it again today winning 6-1 in their match from the No. 3 position. Serdar Bojadjiev and Lluis Miralles Miro fell for the first time as a pair today from the No. 2 position, but with two wins already secured, West Florida moved to singles with the advantage.

Singles play started slowly for the Argos as they fell behind one set in three of the six positions before buckling down and winning the match with four singles victories.

Bojadjiev, after taking down the twelfth ranked player in the nation on Thursday, picked up another win today finishing 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 from the No. 1 position. Lecoutre playing from the No. 2 position secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory in his match to give the Argos another point. From the No. 5 position, Nery was able to bounce back from his loss on Thursday to pick up a 6-3, 6-3 win today. The final point came from the No. 6 position as Miralles Miro won 4-6, 2-6, 1-6 to finish the first match for West Florida.

Banderia and Juan Motta had their matches go unfinished as the Argonauts had already secured the victory in the match.

About the Spring Hill Match: From the second match of the day the Argonauts were able to push past the Badgers and win 6-1 to improve to 2-0 on the day.

With some new pairings and some players seeing their first action of the year, West Florida was still able to do enough to walk away with the lone point.

Lecoutre and Shkrob were the only pairing to play in both matches and they picked up yet another win finishing with a 6-4 victory from the No. 1 position. Lucas Pedrotti and Miralles Miro teamed up from the No. 2 position and secured the second win with a 6-3 victory from the No. 2 position. Luke Racine and Motta were unable to win from the No. 3 position but the Argos were still able to come out with the point.

In singles, West Florida sent out three players for their first matches of the year and all three were able to come out victorious on the day.

Alan Benitez, Shkrob, and Racine all came out victorious in their matches to each improve to 1-0 on the year and secure the win for the Argonauts. Juan Cabrera playing from the No. 1 position in this match remained unbeaten on the year picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win. The final point of the day came from Miralles Miro who pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory playing from the No. 2 position.

Notes from the Coach: After a solid week of play from the Argonauts, here is what Head Coach Derrick Racine had to say about his team's effort today.

"It was a very good day for the entire Argo team," stated Coach Racine. "We played two matches against two very solid teams. Most all of our players were able to get into a match today and the energy was high throughout both matches. We have a big week coming up so it's nice to head into the week with a lot of confidence and team spirit."

Next Up for the Argos: There won't be much rest for West Florida as they have just two days off before facing #22 ranked West Alabama here at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. Then on Thursday, Montevallo will round out the home stretch before the Argos hit the road again on Saturday to face #11 Delta State and Christian Brothers to finish the week.
