JACKSON, Tenn. – The UWF women's basketball team was defeated by Union, 69-46, in the opening round of the 2020 GSC Tournament at Fred Delay Gymnasium Tuesday night.
UWF ends the season at 9-10 overall while Union improves to 16-5 and advances to the tournament semifinals on Friday.
The Argonauts shot 30 percent and committed 21 turnovers.
Gabby Brown led UWF with 11 points.
Aline Fevrier had 10 off the bench and
Charlotte Ellmore had nine.
Union used a size advantage to outscore UWF 34-14 in the paint. GSC West Division Player of the Year Jaelencia Williams had 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and nine rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs made all seven of their 3-pointers in the first half as they built a 40-22 lead.
UWF was unable to find a shooting touch in the first quarter, falling behind 25-5 while being outshot 53 percent to 17 percent. Union also scored 10 points off nine Argo turnovers.
UWF came out and shot the ball better in the second quarter, making three of its first four attempts. Fevrier got an offensive put back before Brown nailed a deep corner three as the Argonauts got to within nine, 30-21. But the Lady Bulldogs scored seven unanswered and closed the period on a 10-1 stretch for a 40-22 lead.
Neither team could find the consistent scoring early in the third. The Lady Bulldogs defense limited the Argos to just eight points and made 6-of-7 field goals in the final few minutes to stretch their lead to 27 after three.
