CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Florida Men's Tennis team was back in action Friday after having nearly a week off since their last match the previous Saturday. Taking on the No. 11 ranked Delta State, the Argonauts showed no signs of rust picking up a 5-2 victory over the Statesmen. This is now the second time this season West Florida has taken down Delta State and marks the fifth consecutive win overall for the Argonauts.
The Argonauts now improve to 10-2 on the season with the victory today as well as 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play. West Florida will look to continue this momentum into the coming week as they will face three more conference foes including Christian Brothers tomorrow afternoon.
Today's match was another great day for West Florida in doubles play as they secured the lone point for the eleventh time this season.
Serdar Bojadjiev and partner
Lluis Miralles Miro teamed up from the No. 2 position today and cruised to a 6-2 victory to start the Argos off on the right foot.
Nicolas Lecoutre and
William Shkrob were able to shut the door on the Statesmen picking up a victory from the No. 3 position to secure the lone point.
"The Men's match was once again a battle," Head Coach
Derrick Racine stated. "We played great doubles and won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the point."
Singles play is where the Argonauts ran into some early troubles, however, they were able to fight back and do enough to secure four more points in the match.
Bojadjiev, in one of the top matches of the day, fought back from a first-set deficit to take down the No. 26 ranked player in the nation 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 to win from the No. 1 position.
Juan Cabrera continued his dominance in singles play today winning 7-6, 6-3 from the No. 3 position to remain unbeaten on the year.
Juan Motta and Nery were also able to fight back from first set deficits in their matches each winning in the third set to secure the win for West Florida.
"In singles, we got off to a slow start and dropped the first set in five of the six singles matches," Coach Racine noted. "The guys battled hard and fought back in the match. We were down two match points at the No. 1 position and Sed came back to win that one. Motta also did a great job from the No. 5 position coming back convincingly to secure the match."
West Florida will continue their weekend road trip tomorrow when they square off with Christian Brothers at 1:30 PM from Memphis, Tennessee where they will look to end the trip with another win.
