UWF draws nine walks in victory

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla.
– After being stifled in yesterday's double-header, the UWF Baseball bats broke out in a big way as they put 14 runs on the board in a 14-2 victory over Christian Brothers University on Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.

With the victory in game three of the series, West Florida earned the sweep and moved to 17-5 overall and 16-5 in the Gulf South Conference.  CBU dropped to 2-16 with the defeat.

Justin Dunnam led all Argonauts with four RBI's in the contest, while three other Argos drove in two runs in the game.  Dunnam, along with Jason Roberts, Dylan Menhennett and Sam Clement, getting the start at catcher all had two hits.  Roberts led all Argos with three runs scored.

The Argonauts tallied a season-high 14 runs on Sunday as they also won their fifth-straight series.  The sweep of the Buccaneers marks the third time in 2021 that UWF has swept an opponent, as the Argos swept Mississippi College on March 5th and 6th, while they also won all three games in the season-opening series against West Alabama.

It was the highest scoring output by UWF since February 2020 when they scored 15 against West Alabama.

West Florida was able to jump on CBU starter, Travis Cole, from the start as the home team scored seven runs in the first inning, collecting five hits in the frame.  Dunnam singled through the right side to open the inning, while Imwalle walked in the next at-bat to put two runners on.

Cullan O'Shea, the hero of Saturday's game two, opened the scoring with a single to left field to bring home Dunnam.  Imwalle would score after Menhennett, the next batter, grounded to shortstop.  Roberts followed Menhennett with an RBI single to score O'Shea, with Roberts eventually moving to third on back-to-back singles by Clement and Joey Wozniak.

UWF would score on three straight bases loaded walks while Imwalle would close the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Fontenot.  Cole was charged with the loss for the Bucs as the right-hander only got one out, while giving up seven runs on five hits.

The Argos would strike again in the bottom of the second on consecutive at-bats.  Menhennett once again led off the inning with a single to left side of the infield before coming home on a double by Roberts.  Roberts would immediately score a few pitches later as Clement singled to right field, making the score, 9-0.

West Florida would tack on five more runs in the bottom of the third frame as Clement earned a sacrifice fly to right to bring home O'Shea, while Menhennett scored again on a bases-loaded walk.  Dunnam would provide the biggest highlight of the game with two outs in the inning as the left fielder tripled to right center, to score three and put the Bucs away for good.

On the mound, UWF used four pitchers on the night.  Ryan Brewer got the start and even though the right-hander labored through four innings of work, he was largely effective as he only allowed two runs.  However, he did give up a season-high 10 hits, all of the single variety.  Robert Sherlock, came in relief of Brewer, and the Freshman was able to earn the win as he pitched one inning, allowing two hits while striking out two.

Alex Knight and Hunter Lucas pitched the sixth and seventh innings for the Argos with the duo throwing an inning and collecting one strikeout each.

UWF will have a few days off before returning to action in a crucial weekend series with GSC foe, Valdosta State.  First pitch on Friday night from Valdosta State is set for 5 p.m. while Saturday's double-header will begin at 1 p.m.
