Women’s Tennis Hits the Road to Face Two Conference Opponents this Weekend

First away matches for the Argonauts since February

CLEVELAND, Miss. - After getting a couple more days of rest due to Tuesday and Thursday's matches being postponed, the West Florida Women's Tennis Team will finally be back in action this weekend when they face Delta State on Friday and Christian Brothers on Saturday. Coming off of a difficult match against the #1 ranked University of Indianapolis, the Argonauts are looking to bounce back with a couple of huge conference victories this weekend on the road.

As the sixth-ranked team in the nation, West Florida enters Friday with a 6-3 record to show for their efforts so far this season. This includes a couple of big wins against top-ten teams when they took down #5 Columbus State and #10 Flagler last month.

With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Argonauts are entering into a very busy portion of their season including six conference matches as well as a meeting with #16 North Georgia all before the regular season ends on April 10th. It will be important to finish out strong for West Florida if they want to continue to climb up the national rankings as well as the regional rankings.

About West Florida - The Argonauts, who started their season 3-0 in conference play, will look to improve their conference record when they face Delta State and Christian Brothers this weekend. This will begin a stretch of four straight conference games in what will be a very important time for the Argos.

As a team the Argonauts are led by Berta Bonardi who is the No. 1 ranked player in the nation after her dominant play while at West Florida. On the season, Bonardi has a dominant 7-1 record in singles to serve as the foundation of West Florida's singles lineup.

Irene Recuenco and Sara Yigin have also been big contributors to the Argonauts success each playing very well on the year. Recuenco currently holds a 6-3 record primary playing from the No. 2 position and serves as a great compliment to Bonardi at the top of the lineup. Yigin, as a freshman, has started 6-0 in singles and has picked up some huge points from the No. 4 position throughout the season.

In total, the Argonauts are 33-16 on the season in singles and will look to continue developing and improving as the season progresses.

About Delta State – On the season the Lady Statesmen are 2-4 including a 1-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

In singles play Delta State is led by Valentine Colin and Manuela Impeciati whom each have a 4-2 record in singles on the season. Overall the Lady Statesmen are 17-19 in singles and will need a big effort from throughout the lineup to pull off an upset over the Argos.

Doubles play sees Katheryne Valencia Perez and partner Colin shine the brightest as they have secured two of the three doubles victories Delta State has won on the season.

About Christian Brothers – The Lady Bucs are off to an impressive start to their 2021 campaign going 10-1 so far on the season. With a 5-1 record in conference play, Christian Brothers have made a name for themselves early on this season including picking up a victory over newly ranked Auburn Montgomery earlier in the year.

Led by Raquel Amaro, the Lady Bucs have looked impressive in singles play this season throughout their lineup.

Doubles play has also been a strong suit of Christian Brothers game as they have won the lone point in eight of their eleven matches on the season. Esther Guemes and partner Amaro serve as the primary No. 1 doubles pairing and will look to get the Lady Bucs off to another strong start on Saturday.

Schedule for the Weekend – Action is set to begin on Friday against Delta State which is scheduled to start at noon from Cleveland, Mississippi. On Saturday, the team will travel to Memphis, Tennessee to face Christian Brothers at 1:30 PM (CST) to close out the weekend.
