West Florida Begins Final Stretch of Matches with Two Away Contests this Weekend

Argonauts to face Valdosta State and No. 16 North Georgia from Valdosta, Ga.

VALDOSTA, Ga. – It is another busy weekend for the West Florida Women's Tennis Team as they hit the road again to take on two teams within the span of two days. In the first match of the weekend, the Argonauts will be up against Valdosta State in a very important match for conference standings. Then on Saturday, West Florida will close out the quick trip with another match against a nationally-ranked opponent when they take on No. 16 North Georgia.

West Florida will look to build off of their last road trip in which they went 2-0 over Delta State and Christian Brothers to improve to 8-3 overall on the season. These victories also moved the Argonauts to 5-0 in Gulf South Conference play which puts them atop the Conference alongside West Alabama.

In total, the Argos only have five more matches remaining on the regular season so starting this closing stretch out positively will be very important for West Florida. After the two road matches this weekend, the Argonauts will face West Alabama, Mississippi College, and West Georgia all at home before starting postseason play in late April.

About West Florida – The Argonauts are once again near the top of the ITA National Rankings coming in at No. 6 in the latest poll. This ranking is bolstered by some great play throughout the season so far including wins over two top-ten teams in late February.

Berta Bonardi and partner Sara Yigin have been the steadiest force for the Argonauts in doubles compiling a 7-3 record as a pair so far on the season. This success has helped West Florida secure the lone point in six of their matches on the season to help take some pressure off the Argonauts for singles play.

In singles, Irene Recuenco, Bonardi, and Yigin have all been the standouts combining for a 24-5 record between the three of them. Bonardi who was crowned the nation's top singles player in the last ITA Singles Rankings is currently 8-2 on the season and leads the Argonauts from the No. 1 position. Recuenco is another experienced player in the top-half on West Florida's lineup and has achieved an 8-3 record to complement Bonardi atop the lineup.

The Freshman Yigin has been an exciting player to watch during her first season as an Argonaut as she is currently 8-0 in singles. This success has propelled Yigin to be awarded as the GSC Freshman of the Week three times already this season including the latest recognition coming after her performance this past weekend.

About Valdosta State – The Blazers are off to a 4-5 start on the season with three of their five losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents. However, Valdosta State is still a very dangerous team as they are 4-1 in conference play and sit just behind West Florida and West Alabama in the conference rankings.

Doubles play for the Blazers is led by Hera Brynjarsdottir and partner Rachelle Starreveld who currently hold a 3-1 record as a pair playing from the No. 2 position. Overall Valdosta State is 15-12 in doubles on the season and have won the lone point in six out of their nine matches.

In singles, Estee Widdershoven has served as the Blazers top player this season compiling a 5-3 record from the No. 1 position. Altogether Valdosta State is 20-31 in singles and will need a big effort on Friday if they want to take down the Argonauts.

About North Georgia – As the No. 16 ranked team in the country, North Georgia will put their 8-0 record on the line on Saturday when they take on West Florida. This will be the Nighthawks second match against a ranked opponent as they took down No. 23 Tusculum earlier in the year.

After starting the season 0-3 in doubles play, the Nighthawks have been able to turn things around as of late and have won the lone point in their past five matches. Johanna Lippert and Vaishali Jorge serve as the No. 1 pairing for North Georgia and have a 4-1 record to lead the Nighthawks this season.

Singles play sees the Nighthawks have three players with a 5-0 or better record to help North Georgia achieve an impressive 40- 6 singles record so far this season. Claudelle Labonté Frey and Anna Markvartova have been unbeatable so far this season with each player starting the year with a 7-0 record. Vaishali Jorge serves as the Nighthawks No. 1 player going 5-3 on the year from the top position.

Weekend Schedule – Action is slated to begin from Valdosta, Ga. at 1 PM (ET) on Friday when the Argonauts take on Valdosta State in the first match of the weekend. Then on Saturday, play kicks off bright and early with West Florida squaring off with North Georgia at 9 AM (ET) also from Valdosta.
