PENSACOLA, Fla. – In their first match in nearly a week, the West Florida Women's Tennis Team took down Mississippi College 6-1 to pick up another conference victory. This win now puts the Argonauts at 11-4 on the season with an impressive 7-1 record in conference play.
This victory keeps the Argonauts steady as the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference with the conference tournament quickly approaching on April 22-24 from Montgomery, Alabama. West Florida will have West Georgia on Monday and Montevallo on Friday to close out the regular season as they look to lock down that No. 2 position.
From today's match, the Argonauts won their sixth doubles victory in a row winning from two out of the three positions on the day.
Berta Bonardi and
Sara Yigin, the No. 5 ranked pair in the nation, won 6-1 from the No. 1 position to get the Argonauts off to a good start in doubles play. The final victory came from the No. 2 position as
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Samantha Echevarria won 6-2 to secure the lone point for West Florida.
In singles, the Argonauts continued their success winning from five out of the six positions to give the match to West Florida.
Berta Bonardi, who was recently ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles, won 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 1 position to add a point to the Argonauts total. Silwanowicz won 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 2 position to secure her eighth victory of the season.
Raissa Wagner improved to 6-5 on the season today winning 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 from the No. 4 position. Both Yigin and Echevarria won the final points for West Florida as they won by retirement after their opponents couldn't continue in the match.
Mayumi Saguchi played in her first match today as the Gardner Webb transfer has been sidelined with an injury to this point in the season. Unfortunately, it wasn't the start she was hoping for today as she fell 4-6, 7-5, 7-10 from the No. 6 position but fought hard in her first action back.
West Florida will now have a short turnaround before facing off with West Georgia tomorrow at 9 AM from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
