Argonauts Take Down the Falcons in Final Match of the Regular Season

West Florida ends the season as the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In now their third victory in a row, the West Florida Men's Tennis ended their regular season with some momentum taking down Montevallo 6-1 today. Now 14-4 on the season, West Florida will enter the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Thursday and will be set for a rematch with Montevallo from Montgomery, Alabama.

Today's match saw much of the same for the Argonauts in doubles play as they won from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the lone point in the match.

Serdar Bojadjiev and Lluis Miralles Miro teamed up from the No. 2 position and won their sixth match as a pair coming out with a 6-3 victory in today's match. Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob remained dominant from the No. 3 position winning 6-2 en route to their twelfth consecutive win. Lucas Pedrotti and Gabriel Nery teamed up from the No. 1 position but fell just short today falling 4-6 in their first action as a pair.

Single's play was a little more competitive as the Falcons forced matches to the decisive third-set before the Argonauts eventually took the match winning from five out of the six positions.

Bojadjiev had one of only two straight-set victories on the day for West Florida as he won 6-4, 7-6 from the No. 1 position. Lecoutre, after dropping the first set, bounced back strong taking the next two on the way to his 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Juan Motta rounded out the top of the lineup with a 6-4, 6-4 win from the No. 3 position to move to 15-0 on the season.

From the bottom half, Nery won his tenth singles match of the season winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 from the No. 5 position. The final point of the day came from Miralles Miro at the No. 6 position as he won 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 to give the Argonauts six points on the day.

"This was a preview of the upcoming conference tournament for us today," Head Coach Derrick Racine noted. "We started a bit slow and if we are not there one hundred percent they will beat us. It was good to get in a good quality match before the conference tournament starts to keep us sharp".

In addition to the win, West Florida also recognized five seniors today who have each contributed countless hours and effort to this program. These seniors include Bojadjiev, Lecoutre, Nery, Pedrotti, and Juan Motta whom each received recognition between the doubles and singles portion of today's match.

"Sed was a huge part of us winning the National Championship in 2017 and has continued to progress up the lineup during his time with us," Coach Racine stated. "Nico has been playing No. 2 and No. 3 for pretty much his whole career with us and will be another player who is very hard to replace. Juan Motta has been around since 2017 and has continued to grind and work his way up our lineup. Gabe has been very good for us throughout his career in doubles and has stepped up big in singles this season. Finally, Lucas has been a good player who pushes each player each day, and we're going to miss him as well".

West Florida as mentioned earlier, will now play Montevallo again on Thursday in the first round of the GSC Tournament.
