PENSACOLA, Fla. – In what was a day full of smiles and competitive tennis play, the West Florida Women's Tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Montevallo to close out their regular season on a high note. Now 13-4 on the season and 9-1 in Gulf South Conference play, the Argonauts will head into Thursday's conference tournament as the No. 2 seed just behind West Alabama.
In doubles, West Florida immediately jumped out on the Falcons and won from all three positions to secure the lone point for their eighth straight match.
The two seniors,
Berta Bonardi and
Samantha Echevarria paired up from the No. 1 position today and took care of business winning 6-1 in their match.
Irene Recuenco and
Mayumi Saguchi won their first match as a pairing winning 6-1 from the No. 2 position.
Raissa Wagner and
Isabela Fioravanti won in a walkover from the No. 3 position after Montevallo could not yield a pairing.
In singles, it was much of the same for the Argonauts as they picked up straight-set victories from every position in addition to a walkover win from the No. 6 position.
Bonardi was dominant once again from the No. 1 position winning 6-3, 6-2 for win number fourteen on the season. Recuenco found similar success from the No. 2 position winning 6-1, 6-0 for her third win in a row. To round out the top of the lineup,

From the bottom half of the lineup, Echevarria won 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 4 position to secure victory number ten on the year.
Mayumi Saguchi got the start from the No. 5 position and won her second match of the season winning 6-0, 6-1 in her match. Finally, Wagner's match from the No. 6 position ended in a walkover giving the Argonauts the sweep and a much-needed victory to end the regular season.
"It was good for us to get a match in this week before the conference tournament," Head Coach
Derrick Racine noted. "The girls took care of business today and I think we are ready to take on tournament play in 2-3 days".
In addition to the excellent play on the court today it was also senior day for West Florida in which they honored Bonardi and Echevarria for all of their hard work while with the Argonauts. The ceremony took place between the doubles and singles portion of the match and gave an opportunity for these players to be recognized and cheered on by teammates and supporters.
"It was good to have senior day today and honor Berta and Sammy," Coach Racine stated. "Sammy has been a workhorse for our team and is the hardest worker that we have. Berta is probably the best player we have ever had here and has won almost every award that she could win".
Bonardi, Echevarria, and the rest of the Argonauts will now move towards Thursday when they begin the GSC Tournament from Montgomery, Alabama. As of now, West Florida's opponent has not been ironed out but it will most likely be either Christian Brothers or Valdosta State who have each squared off with the Argonauts already this season.
