Argonauts Win Doubles Point but Fall in Singles Play to No. 7 Valdosta State

This marks the first Conference loss for the Argonauts on the season

VALDOSTA, Ga. – After a fast start against another top-ten team in the nation, the West Florida Men's Tennis Team couldn't find their rhythm in singles played and fell 5-2 against No. 7 Valdosta State. This defeat snaps the Argonauts six-match win streak and puts them with an 11-3 record on the season.

The day got off to a great start for West Florida as they continued their dominance in doubles play winning from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions on the afternoon.

It was Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob getting things started for West Florida winning 6-2 from the No. 3 position to bring the doubles portion to a 1-1 tie after the Blazers won from the No. 1 position. Serdar Bojadjiev and partner Lluis Miralles Miro played in the decisive match from the No. 2 position and came out with a 7-5 victory to give West Florida the one-point advantage heading into singles play.

Singles play was where the momentum began to swing in favor of the Blazers as they came out victorious from five out of the six positions to come out with the win.

From the No. 1, 3, 5, and 6 positions, the Argonauts couldn't find their grove and fell in straight sets in each of these matches. The point from the No. 2 position was much more contested as Lecoutre forced the match into a decisive third set before ultimately falling 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 in this one as well.

Juan Cabrera picked up West Florida's only singles point on the day taking down Luca Mack 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 from the No. 4 position. This victory sees Cabrera continue his unbeaten streak as he is now 11-0 in singles play from several positions on the season.

"We started out great and took the doubles point," Head Coach Derrick Racine stated. "In singles, however, we struggled today, but did have some bright points as Juan Cabrera continued his unbeaten streak and Nicolas Lecoutre had a great three-set match."

West Florida will now have very little time to recoup after the loss today as they face another top-25 opponent tomorrow as well in No. 22 North Georgia. First serve is scheduled for 9 AM (CST) from Valdosta, Ga. and as always stay tuned to GoArgos.com as well as the UWF Men's Tennis social media pages for updates and highlights from tomorrow's match.
