VALDOSTA, Ga. – Facing No. 22 North Georgia, the West Florida Men's Tennis Team fell 3-4 to the Warhawks in what was a very hard-fought match by both teams. After winning their previous six matches including a win over No. 4 Indianapolis, the Argonauts never were able to find their rhythm in singles play this weekend and head back to Pensacola now 11-4 on the season.
Doubles play has been the foundation of this Argonauts this season and that held firm this weekend as West Florida took the lone point in both matches including winning two of the three doubles matches today.
Nicolas Lecoutre and partner
William Shkrob got the Argos off to another fast start picking up a 6-1 win from the No. 3 position as they improve to 12-2 as a pairing on the season. West Florida secured the lone point from the No. 2 position as
Serdar Bojadjiev and
Lluis Miralles Miro won 6-3 to push the Argonauts ahead going into singles play.
Similar to yesterday's match against No. 7 Valdosta State, the Argonauts were competitive from a few positions in the lineup but didn't do enough to come out victorious.
Falling from the No. 1, 2, 4, and 5 positions, it was just
Juan Cabrera and Miro who were able to come out victorious for West Florida. Cabrera playing from the No. 3 position stayed unbeaten on the season winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 from his match. Finally, Miro won 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 from the No. 6 position to move to 6-0 on the season.
"The guys started strong once again in doubles and won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions," Head Coach
Derrick Racine noted. "In singles however, we struggled and hopefully we will get going soon. It was a tough 4-3 loss and it will definitely hurt us in the national rankings".
West Florida now just has two more matches remaining on the season including a big conference contest on Monday when West Alabama comes to town. First serve is scheduled for 1 PM as the Argonauts will look to bounce back from this weekend's results.
