Argonauts to Take on Lady Bucs to Begin GSC Tournament

West Florida enters the Conference tournament as the No. 2 seed

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Florida Women's Tennis team is set to begin postseason play on Thursday when they take on Christian Brothers in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. This will be the second time this season these two teams have squared off with the Argonauts coming out with a 4-1 victory in that matchup.

With a record of 13-4 on the season, West Florida enters Thursday's meeting ranked as the No. 7 team in the country after rising one spot in today's rankings. Securing victories in their final three matches, the Argonauts will look to carry this momentum into what should be a very competitive tournament.

As a nineteen-time GSC Tournament Champion, the Argonauts are looking to continue their streak of conference finals appearances which spans back to 1995 when they joined the Gulf South Conference. In addition, West Florida is trying to secure their tenth-consecutive GSC title but will need to take care of business first on Thursday to keep these streaks alive.

About the Argonauts – With a 9-1 conference record, West Florida has secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament falling just behind West Alabama. However, with wins in seven of their past eight matches this team has proven they can compete with anyone in the nation.

After starting the year slowly in doubles the Argonauts have kicked it into gear as of late winning the lone point in each of their past eight matches. This success stems from success by the No. 1 and No. 2 positions where the Argonauts have won from every match during this stretch.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin serve as the No. 1 pair for West Florida and have compiled a 12-2 record for their efforts on the season. This success has led them to be ranked as the No. 5 doubles pair in the latest ITA rankings which is the highest in the conference. In addition to this pair, Karolina Silwanowicz and Samantha Echevarria have played very well from the No. 2 position to lead the Argonauts to the early advantage in many of their matches.

In singles, the Argonauts have been great all season racking up a 69-26 record overall including an impressive 50-8 mark in conference play. This success is bolstered by the No. 2 and No. 26 ranked players in the country as well as a freshman who has played well beyond her years.

Bonardi, ranked as the No. 2 player in the nation, serves as the Argonauts No. 1 player and has gone 14-2 in all competition this season. To complement her from the No. 2 position, Irene Recuenco has gone 12-4 this season to be ranked No. 26 in the country. Yigin rounds out the top of the order for West Florida as she has gone 11-2 this season as a freshman and has been a key addition to the Argonauts lineup.

About the Lady Bucs – Coming in as the No. 7 seed and with a record of 10-5 on the season, Christian Brothers is having one of their best seasons in program history. Led by strong play from the top of their lineup, the Lady Bucs will be making their first appearance in the conference tournament since the 2014 season.

Christian Brothers comes into Thursday still trying to find the right pieces in doubles play to complement their dominant No. 1 pair.

Raquel Amaro and Esther Guemes have been fantastic for the Lady Bucs in doubles all season going 14-1 on the season from the top spot. This includes a victory over Bonardi and Yigin of West Florida in their previous meeting earlier in the season.

In singles, Amaro and Guemes once again lead the way for the Lady Bucs combining for a 28-2 record from the top two spots on the season.

Amaro has been fantastic in her first season with Christian Brothers after transferring from East Tennessee State before the season. Going 15-0 during the regular season, Amaro has risen to be ranked as the No. 5 singles player in the nation and took down No. 2 ranked Bonardi earlier in the season.

Guemes, another East Tennessee State transfer, has been a strong one-two punch at the top of the lineup for the Lady Bucs going 13-2 from the No. 2 position. Against the Argonauts earlier in the season, Guemes squared off with Recuenco of West Florida and fell 1-6, 2-6 in that one.

Updated National Rankings – Today, a new edition of the Oracle ITA National Team Rankings was announced and had West Florida move up one position from No. 8 to No. 7 in the country. This slight bump comes after the Argonauts closed out their regular season with three victories all against conference opponents.

West Florida is now one of three GSC teams to be featured in this latest poll as West Alabama (No. 5) and Auburn Montgomery (No. 23) each remained in the top-25 as well.

Schedule for Thursday – Currently, the times and locations for Thursday's match against Christian Brothers have not been announced, but we do know that it will be played at either Lagoon Park or O'Conner Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama.
