MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In today's 2021 Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Championship, the West Florida Men's Tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 3 Valdosta State falling 4-2 in the match. The win marked three straight championships for John Hansen and the Blazers.
It was an unusual start to the day today for both teams as the opening serve was pushed back five and a half hours to 2:30 PM due to rain in the Montgomery area. With another lightning delay during the match in total, the Championship took nearly five hours to complete.
After winning the lone point in their previous meeting, the Argonauts couldn't prevail today falling from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to give the Blazers the edge heading to singles.
Serdar Bojadjiev and
Lluis Miralles Miro were the lone pair to win in doubles today winning 6-4 from the No. 2 position over Felline and Cizek of the Blazers.
In singles, the Argonauts bounced back strong taking the first set in four out of the six positions.
Bojadjiev, taking on the No. 5 ranked player in the country, looked dominant in his first set winning 6-2 from the No. 1 position.
Juan Cabrera playing from the No. 3 position, took the first set in his 6-3 over No. 22 ranked Christian Wedel.
Gabriel Nery swept his first set 6-0 from the No. 5 position while Miralles Miro won 6-2 in set one from the No. 6 position.
Now with some momentum and strong starts in the second set from numerous positions, mother nature once again played a factor and forced a nearly hour-long stoppage in the match.
Once the lightning cleared, players warmed up briefly before trading back and forth punches the rest of the match.
From the No. 1 position, Bojadjiev won in straight sets winning 6-3 in his second set. Cabrera wasn't far behind winning 6-3 in set two from his match as well to tie the match at two apiece. After falling from the No. 4 position, it now came down to the No. 5 and No. 6 matches to decide the championship.
Ultimately, the match came down to the No. 5 position as Nery fell in a third-set tiebreaker to Christian Felline to clinch the match for Valdosta State.
The fate of West Florida's remaining season comes down to the South Region voters as they will look to continue their season in the South Regional. Selections will be made on May 4, and if the Argonauts are chosen they will play on their home court as West Florida was chosen to host the regional.
