Box Score

CARROLLTON, Ga.
Cullan O'Shea and Miller Hancock totaled three home runs, while Tyler Dowdy provided a quality start on the mound as the ninth ranked West Florida baseball team soundly defeated West Georgia, 10-3, on Monday afternoon at Cole Field in Carrollton, Georgia.

The victory moves UWF to 26-8 overall and 25-8 in the Gulf South Conference while UWG drops to 15-21 on the year.  With the win, the Argonauts clinched their ninth-straight GSC series.  It also marked the 12th time this season that West Florida has scored 10 or more runs in a game.  Additionally, the 25 conference wins are the most in program history.

"The team came ready to compete today", stated UWF Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat.  "Dowdy gave us a strong seven innings with Means closing it out and having a strong two innings of his own.  The offense was strong with O'Shea's two home runs, and we had the big inning just as we did in game one of the series."

On the day, the Argos tallied 16 hits with seven extra-base hits.  O'Shea led the way with two home runs, his fifth and sixth of the season, while Hancock blasted his first round-tripper of his career.  Four other Argonauts recorded a double in the contest with Sam Clement, Justin Dunnam, True Fontenot and Jason Roberts each having a two-base knock.

Dylan Menhennett added two hits on the day, extending his hitting streak to 23 games which moves him into second-place in UWF program history.  Stephen Jackson, who had a hit in 29 straight games in the 1998 season, is the only other Argo with a hitting streak longer than Menhennett in school history.  O'Shea and Hancock paced the team with four and three RBI's in the victory.

For the third straight contest, UWG got on the board first as the Wolves tallied runs in the first and second inning with Brody Wortham driving a solo homer to right-center field and Joseph Hill collecting an RBI single in the second to make it 2-0.

After being shut down by Wolves starter, Andrew Smith through the first four innings, the Argo offense exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning.  After the first two baserunners stood at second and third following a double by Fontenot, Hancock came through with a two-RBI single through the infield to tie the game at two apiece.

In the next at-bat, O'Shea launched the first of two homeruns to right-center field to give West Florida a two-run advantage.  Two batters later, Adam Imwalle would score Menhennett, who had singled and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 5-2.  Clement and Dunnam scored the final two runs of the inning to go to the sixth with the Argonauts up 7-2.

Dowdy was in control after the first two innings, as the freshman right-hander finished throwing seven innings, allowing three runs on ten hits with two strikeouts.  The seven innings were the second longest-outing of Dowdy's young career as he moved to 4-1 on the year with the victory.

O'Shea picked up his second home run of the year with another two-run shot to right-center in the top of the sixth, while Hancock hit a solo blast in the top of the eighth.  Sean Means came on for the final two innings of relief for UWF with the Naples, Florida only allowing one hit with no walks on 26 pitches.  Means set the Wolves down in order to close the game.

With his fifth and sixth home runs of the season, O'Shea inches closer to Menhennett who leads the team with eight on the year.

Smith took the loss for UWG after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.  Cody Mish led the Wolves with three hits while Dan Oberst and Wortham added two hits apiece.

The 16 hits were the third most this season for the Argos, while the 43 at-bats were the second highest total of 2021.

Next up, West Florida will have a few days off before taking on GSC-leading and second-ranked Lee on Friday and Saturday at Jim Spooner Field.  First pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m. with a double-header on Saturday slated to begin at 1 p.m.

"We know we have a short turn-around and we have to be ready as we finish the regular season with Lee", Jeffcoat closed.
