West Florida Drops Heartbreaker to No. 10 West Alabama

Marks the Argonauts first conference loss of the season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In heartbreaking fashion, the West Florida Women's Tennis Team dropped their first conference match of the season falling 3-4 to No. 10 West Alabama. The Argonauts are now 10-4 on the season including a 6-1 conference record with just two matched remaining in the regular season.

West Florida started the day in as good of fashion as possible winning all three doubles matches to secure the lone point for the fifth match in a row.

Berta Bonardi and Sara Yigin won 6-1 from the No. 1 position to get the Argonauts off to a good start. Karolina Silwanowicz and Samantha Echevarria won in similar fashion from the No. 2 position picking up a 6-2 victory in their match. Irene Recuenco and Raissa Wagner completed the doubles sweep for the Argos winning 6-4 from the No. 3 position to wrap up the doubles portion.

In singles, the Argonauts got some solid play from the top of their lineup but couldn't find that decisive third victory to secure the victory on the day.

Bonardi wrapped up her match in quick fashion winning 6-1, 6-0 from the No. 1 position to get the Argonauts to two points on the day. Recuenco picked up the final point of the day securing a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory from the No. 2 position to put the Argonauts up 3-1 in the match.

In the final three matches, Silwanowicz, Echevarria, and Wagner all battled hard but ultimately came out on the wrong end in each securing the victory for West Alabama.

Words from the Coach – "We knew it would be a very tough match today," Head Coach Derrick Racine noted. "Sometimes a loss can be better than a win because you think about it more. In every match we lost we had chances to possibly win. This is a good learning experience for the team and can go a long way for the remainder of play this season".

Next Up for West Florida – The Argonauts will play again at home on Friday when they take on Mississippi College in another late season conference contest. First serve is scheduled for 11 AM from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
