Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. –For the second time in school history, the UWF Baseball Team won the Gulf South Conference tournament title, as they throttled Delta State, 11-4, in game three of the GSC Championship Series on Thursday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.

With the win, the second-ranked Argos improve to 34-9 on the year and secure the first conference championship for the program since 2007 and take the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional which will take place May 27-30 at Jim Spooner Field in Pensacola.  In addition, it is the third title this year for UWF as a whole.

Tyler Dowdy, Cullan O'Shea and Dylan Menhennett were named to the conference's all-tournament team, while Evan Floyd was named as the most outstanding player of the tournament after he threw 15 scoreless innings in two starts with 19 strikeouts.

"(Evan) is the workhorse at the top of the rotation", stated UWF Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat.  "He gave us two quality starts, including a shutout, and you could not ask for more and we hope he continues that into the regional."

Five Argonauts had multi-hit games as Miller Hancock, Adam Imwalle, Justin Dunnam, Sam Clement and True Fontenot all had two hits each.  Fontenot led all players with three runs batted in.  Clement and Hancock added two RBI's as UWF had 12 total hits which was the 31st time this season that the club has had 10 or more hits in a contest.  It was also the first time in 32 games that Menhennett did not record a hit.

"It was awesome", said Jeffcoat.  "To see our guys come out and swing the bats like they did, I was very proud of them.  And then on top of that, Ryan Brewer shut them down and give us seven quality innings, that along with the offense, was great to see. It just feels really great, especially with everything that has happened this year and with the way our guys have sacrificed, it made this championship more special."

After being slowed in the first two games of the series, West Florida jumped on DSU's (28-18) starter, Josh Lewis, in the top of the first as the Argos plated seven runs in the frame.  13 batters came to the plate as O'Shea began the onslaught with a hit-by pitch.  Following a walk by Menhennett, Imwalle broke the scoring seal with a single through the left side to score O'Shea.  After Matthew Estrada reached on a fielding error to load the bases, Dunnam and Dowdy hit back-to-back singles to extend the lead to 3-0 and chase Lewis from the mound.

Lewis took the loss for DSU as the left-hander was charged with six runs (five earned) on three hits with a walk in a third of an inning.  UWF added four more runs in the frame on three straight singles from Clement, Fontenot and Hancock.

The offense went back to work in the top of the second as Imwalle started the inning with a double to right-field.  After Dunnam had a bunt single down the line to load the bases, Imwalle came home on a sacrifice fly to left field from Clement, to make it 8-0.  Estrada scored in the next at-bat on a double down the left-field line by Fontenot.

With the early offensive onslaught, Ryan Brewer, was able to settle in on the mound and cruise through seven innings.  Brewer, a native of Apopka, Florida, earned the win and moved to 6-2 on the year after he threw seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits while recording five strikeouts.  He faced the minimum in three of his seven innings and it was the longest outing by Brewer since he threw 8.2 innings against Alabama Huntsville on February 27th.

"Seeing Brewer get his body back up after only going through four or five innings in his last couple of starts, it was a great sign for us going into the regional because we need him to keep pitching well."

After the Statesmen got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 9-1, UWF struck again for two more runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Hancock with Estrada scoring on another error by DSU.  Delta State had three errors on the afternoon.

DSU scored a run in the fifth and two in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles to complete their scoring totals.  Jake Barlow, also named to the all-tournament for Delta, went four-for-four in the contest with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.  Chad Ragland added two hits for the Statesmen while Jackson Rutledge threw 5.2 scoreless innings for the Statesmen out of the bullpen.
