FLORENCE, S.C. – It was yet again another dominant start to the weekend from the University of West Florida Volleyball team as they picked up two more wins today on the opening day of the FMU Invitational.
Playing Mount Olive and then the hosts Francis Marion on the opening day of competition, the Argonauts improve to 9-1 on the season with all nine wins coming in fashion of the sweep.
West Florida will now look to continue their success again tomorrow when they play two more matches to close out the weekend. The Argonauts are set to take on Charleston (W.V.) and Gannon to end the Invitational with the matches scheduled for 10 am (CST) and 2 pm (CST) from Florence.
Against Mount Olive: The Argonauts began play bright and early on Friday and wasted no time showing their muscle taking down the Trojans in straight sets on the day.
In what is now their eighth sweep of the season, West Florida played a very efficient match in which both their offense and defense shined.
Graduate transfer
Tyler Fezzey led the Argonauts offensively in the match finishing with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .667% in just two sets played. Playing 14 players in the match, West Florida finished their first match of the day with 34 kills, 33 assists, and a hitting percentage of .484% as a team.
Defensively, the Argos picked up seven total team blocks in the match including five blocks from Freshman
Jenna Zydlo. As a team, West Florida limited Mount Olive to a hitting percentage of just .036% in what was a very dominant win all around.
Against Francis Marion: Keeping the momentum into the night match, West Florida got things started early against the Patriots and kept it rolling throughout the entire match.
In yet another sweep, the West Florida middles in tonight's match feasted combining for 20 kills in the match including an insane .679 hitting percentage combined. In total, the Argonauts finished the match with 45 kills on 40 assists with a hitting percentage of .330% as a team.
On the defensive side, West Florida finished with 14 total team blocks with
Veresia Yon,
Taylor Vaneekeren, and Zydlo each finishing with five or more kills.
Tomorrow's Schedule: West Florida will be back in action tomorrow in the closing day of competition from the FMU Invitational. The Argonauts first match will be against Charleston (W.V.) at 10 am (CST) before wrapping up the weekend against Gannon at 2 pm (CST).
