Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

West Florida Starts the Season with Thrilling Sweep Over #23 Wheeling

Three Argonauts recorded double-digit kills on the night

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In what was their first countable action in 637 days, the West Florida Volleyball team showed no rust taking down Wheeling, the number 23 ranked team in the nation, in straight sets. Backed by Argonaut fans in the Field House as well as the built-up excitement from a nearly two year break away from the sport these players love, West Florida was ready to go from the opening whistle.

Set one saw the Argonauts win a very close affair pulling away towards the end to secure a 25-18 set one victory. Madi Cooler and Veresia Yon led the way offensively for West Florida in the first set as Yon recorded 4 kills while Cooler tacked on 5 kills herself. Defensively, the Argonauts established their blocking game early on Thursday picking up five total team blocks in the first set in what would ultimately be 13 total team blocks in the match.

With momentum on their side, UWF went ahead early in set number two and stayed ahead the rest of the way for a 25-17 win to give them a 2-0 lead in the match. Tyler Fezzey had a great set both offensively and defensively in set two picking up 5 kills as well as 4 block assists in the set.

In set three the Argonauts clinched the match in what was by far the most back-and-forth set of the night. After Wheeling jumped out to an early 9-6 lead, a timely timeout refocused the Argonauts and allowed them to bring the score back to 15-16 before Wheeling took their first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, both teams traded punches before ultimately West Florida took the set and the match with a 26-24 final from set three.

When asked about the match, Head Coach Melissa Wolter had this to say:

"I thought we managed situations very well tonight," stated Wolter. "We didn't let different servers run away with rotations. This was a total team effort, and I am really proud of our performance tonight".

West Florida will look to carry this momentum into the rest of the Invitational as they are back in action tomorrow with two more matches. The first match will see the Argonauts take on Spring Hill at 2 pm before returning at 7 pm to take on Southern Indiana.
