UWF Hosts MC, Delta State Following 10-Day Layoff

The Argonauts are 5-0 at home this season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Following a 10-day layoff with a postponed game, the UWF women's basketball team will return to the hardwood at the UWF Field House this week, playing host to Mississippi College and Delta State. The MC contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and the game with the Lady Statesmen is set to start at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
 
ABOUT THE ARGOS
* UWF is 11-2 overall & 6-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Argonauts had their 10-game win streak snapped at West Alabama on New Year's Eve before picking up a win two days later at UAH.
Jaclyn Jarnot (Jar-knit) averages a double-double with 16.7 points per game and 13.6 rebounds per game (1st in GSC, third in NCAA). Her 10.2 defensive boards per contest are second in the country. The North Dakota transfer has registered a double-double in nine games to rank fifth in the country. She has missed the last two games due to COVID health and safety protocols.
*Zoe Piller (Zoey) averages 16.8 ppg and 9.7 rpg with seven double-doubles. She leads the GSC and is eighth in the NCAA with a 62.1 FG pct. Her scoring average is sixth in the NCAA among freshmen. She has been the GSC Freshman of the Week four times and the Player of the Week once.
Maddie Griffon (Grif-fawn) is third on the team in scoring at 9.5 ppg and second with 45 assists (3.8 apg). Her 18 steals are first among the Argos.
Gabby Brown is fourth in scoring on the team with 8.8 ppg and third in rebounding at 4.2 rpg. Her 18 3-pointers are second on the squad.
Charlotte Ellmore leads the team with 36.5 minutes per game and leads the team with 48 assists. She is 26th nationally and 2nd in the GSC with a 2.09 assist-to-turnover ratio.

UWF APPROACHING 600 ALL-TIME WOMEN'S BASKETBALL VICTORIES
* UWF enters the weekend with 599 all-time wins dating back 42 years to the inaugural season of 1981-82. The Argonauts are 599-520 all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 18 appearances.
* In 28 seasons of NCAA/GSC membership, the program is 424-328 for a .564 winning pct., ranking fifth among current members and third among those that have been in the league for at least 10 seasons.

PILLER-JARNOT ARE THE HIGHEST SCORING FRONTCOURT TANDEM IN THE COUNTRY
* UWF's starting front court duo of Zoe Piller and Jaclyn Jarnit have combined for 33.5 points and 23.3 rebounds per game. That makes them the highest scoring frontcourt in the country and the 19th highest scoring combo.
* The duo has 16 combined double-doubles and the Argos are 6-0 when they have one in the same game.

UWF OFF TO ANOTHER STRONG START
* UWF is playing some strong basketball to start the season. The 11-2 start is currently tied for the second best after 13 games in program history. It is also the fourth time in the last seven years to be at least at 10-3 or better after 13 contests. The three previous teams all won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament with the 2017 squad reaching in the Elite Eight.

GETTING TO THE LINE
* UWF has done a very good job of getting to the free throw line this season, ranking in the top 20 nationally in both makes (19th, 203) and attempts (20th, 286). In fact, the Argonauts have made more free throws than their opponents have attempts (203 vs. 202).
* The five regular starters have all taken at least 23 free throws, with one of the top reserves, Fanny Hullmi, at 26 attempts. 

REBOUNDING A STRENGTH FOR UWF ONCE AGAIN
* Historically, UWF has been a dominant rebounding team at both ends of the floor and 2021-22 is no different. UWF ranks first in the GSC at 42.2 rpg and is second in rebound defense, allowing just 31.5 rpg. The 9.8 rebound margin is first (16 th in NCAA), with Delta State in second at 9.7.

UWF RECEiVING VOTES IN WBCA TOP 25 POLL, RANKED SIXTH IN THE D2SIDA SOUTH REGION POLL
* UWF received five votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 Poll. That places the Argonauts fifth among the others receiving votes.
* UWF moved up to one spot to No. 5 in the latest D2 Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) region rankings.
* Union is No. 1 with Tampa and Valdosta State at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Eckerd saw its 9-0 record fall to 9-1 after a loss to Florida Southern and dropped to No. 4. 
 
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
* MC is 8-5 overall and 3-3 in GSC play. The Lady Choctaws are coming off a 73-51 win over West Georgia following losses to Union (83-75) and Christian Brothers (71-61).
* Freshman guard Ally Alford leads the team with 13.9 points per game and has paced the squad with 28 3-pointers on 41 percent shooting from outside. She has four 20-plus point games, including 27 and 23 against Union and UWG. Fellow guard Kyiah Julian is also averaging double figures in scoring with 10.6 points per game and 22 made triples.
* MC averages 67.6 ppg on 39.5 pct. shooting, including 5.5 3-pointers per contest at 33 pct. They have a plus-6.2 rebounding margin, 12.5 steals per game and block 2.5 shots per game. The Lady Choctaws lead the GSC in both field goal percentage defense (34.6) and scoring defense (53.6).
* Greg Long is in his second season at MC and is 11-14 at MC. He is 31-15 in his third season as a head coach following a 20-11 mark at Arkansas-Monticello in 2019-20. He is a 2005 graduate of Delta State who played collegiately at Chowan.
 
UWF-MC SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 9-3 against MC since the Lady Choctaws made the transition from NCAA Division 3 to Division 2 in 2014. The Argos are 6-0 at the UWF Field House and 3-3 at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton.
* The teams did not face one another last season with the GSC split into East/West Divisions.

ABOUT DELTA STATE
* DSU enters the weekend with a 7-5 mark and a 5-2 ledger in league play. The Lady Statesmen are in fourth place. They had won six-consecutive games prior to losses Union (77-63) and at West Georgia (74-60).
* Four players average at least 9.8 points per game, led by senior Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse at 14.5 ppg. She also has 43 assists, 17 steals and just 11 turnovers. She leads the GCS with a 3.91 assist-to-turnover radio. Zyaire Ewing has 13.7 ppg and a team-high 9.6 rebounds per game.
* The Lady Statesmen average 64.8 ppg on 41.5 pct shooting. The attempt just 13.1 3-pointers per game, the lowest in the GSC. DSU has three players making at least 82 pct. from the FT line and shoot 76.1 pct. as a team.
 
UWF-DELTA STATE SERIES HISTORY
* DSU leads the series 14-13 and has won three of the last four meetings. Prior to that, UWF had won eight-consecutive dating back to the 2014 GSC Championship game. Included in the 8-game streak were back-to-back overtime wins in the 2014-15 season.
 
YELTON IN TENTH SEASON AT UWF
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her tenth season at UWF and has a 160-108 record with the Argos … She is 217-192 in her 15th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 9-3 against MC and 11-6 against Delta State.
 
WIN STREAK REACHED 10, TIED FOR NO. 3 IN PROGRAM HISTORY
* UWF reeled off 10-consecutive wins after a season-opening loss, which made the streak tied for the third-longest in UWF women's basketball history. The 1997-98 team that started 17-1, reeled off 14-straight after a 3-1 start to hold the record. The 2018-19 squad won the final 13 regular-season games for No. 2 on the list, just ahead of the 10-straight by this year's team and the 2005-06 team.
  
UWF PICKED 8TH IN GSC COACHES POLL
* UWF was picked to finish eighth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Wolves were picked ninth … Defending champion Union earned 10 of 12 first place votes and was picked first for the third-consecutive year. Lee received on first place vote, followed by Valdosta State with the 13th top vote. Montevallo took fourth, while Delta State rounded out the top five with Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama and West Florida sixth through eighth. West Georgia was ninth, while Christian Brothers, Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter also in the list.
